Manyrwomen enjoyreceiving

but unfortunately cut .flowers
don't last very. long. , Ontario
Ministry , of Agriculture and
Food horticulturist J.K.'
Hughes has some useful tips to.
help you prolong thelife of your'
bouquet. •
"As soon as it arrives, cut one
to two inches off each stem and
place the flowers, in warm
water," he advises. To supply
the blooms with necessary
food, and prevent blockages of
the tissues that conduct
nutrients up the sterns add a
preservative to the water, This
will ,also control bacterial
growth in the water and, in
some cases, help develop
unopened 'buds. Preservatives
are available at most' florists
and garden centers.
Mr. Hughes says the flowers
need daily attention..

Have you ever looked out
.your window, as 'I did this
morning, to see a dog playing
with a piece of rag? He will toss
it tip 'in the air, run with it,. toss
it again, pick it up and tear at it
until it's im shreds. That's what ,
some people do with other
person's -reputations. ,
They get a story about
somebody or 'a grudge. against
someone and they can't leave it
alone. They seem to take
malicious delight running
around, like the dog with the
rag, judging, condemning and
destroying.`
Unfortunately, this attitude, is
often found among Christians
who are really supposed to
know betted. There is bickering
and tale telling and too much
eagerness to pass on things that
would be much better left
unrepeated. Would that we
, could remember what Peter
said in his first letter, "Love
covers a multitude of sins," and
forgive and forget the trap-
sgre§sions of our brothers.
A .W • Tozer says everyone
should,, have a little plot out in
his garden when he can go and
bury all the evil stories passed
on to him and say, "Here lies in
peace. the story about my
brother." When God invites you
to know (and if you don't know,
He 'expects yot) to learn) His
table manners. He won't let you
eat, says Mr: Tozer, unless you
obey the etiquette of the table.
And the etiquette of the table is
that you don't tell stories about
the brother who is sitting at the
table with you ... no, matter
what his denomination,
nationality or background.
So,,.4nuch, for those' who are
tempted ' to gossip, but what
about those who are the butt of
tale -bearing even though they
are often innocent? Well; I'm
found, and I'm sure many of
you have, too, that silence is 'the
best treatment.
Althoug,h we are born with a
desire to defend ourselves,'it
often doesn't do much good .•.
-you really can't fight fire with
fire.
God told Moses in Exodus23,
"I will be an enemy unto thine
enemies and an adversary to
thine adversaries." I rbelieve
that means that if I'm in the
right I don't have to defend my.
position, God will.
What do we want' to defend?
Well, sometimes it's' our
talents, our work, and most
often our reputation. Our
reputation is . what people think
we are and if a story gets out
about. us, the big temptation' is
. "to try to run it to.earth•, But this
is practically impossible ... it's
'like trying to find the bird after
you've picked up the feather off
the lawn. You can't 'do it. But if
you turn the whole matter over
to God, keep your dignity and
silence' those who are
spreading • the story will
eventually be discredited.
Of course, if we could all only
learn God's etiquette to live in
love with one another and not
spread hurtful tales, God
wouldn't have to take up this
defense at all.
