mien OossiP wild flowers are nature's small wonders
BY JEAN BARNETT
r,
,
"A tiny blossom in the deepest
woods
Appears like a shining miracle
in the darkness"
In 1848, there were 267
wildflowers listed in the Nor -
the'. stern U.S. and Canada. In
the ,list stood at 8,340. By
g some which originated
ere, trading and cross -
zing, botanists tell us that
e e are nowlover 2,000,000.
As gardeners and loverS-of—J._
nature let' us wander down our
owncountry lanes and through
our few remaining woodland
sanctuaries and explore
nature's world of pleasure,
solace, reverence, food,
healing, hope, revival and
survival, /amongst our most
common wildflowers.
BLOODROOT (Indian Paint)
whose rhizonies yield 7,the.
orange -fed paint used as war
paint by the Indians. ,arty
settlers dipped lumps of sugar
in it for a cough remedy.
The MAY APPLE, whose
yellowish fruit .is edible and
was used by the Ind4ns for its
purgative_ qualities, although
taken in excess could be fatal.
WILD GINGER, whose
rhizomes when broken open
give of a ginger smell was'used
by the American Indians to
make an aromatic brew to be
used as a digestive and
diuretic.
CHICORY, that 0 starry -blue
wayside flower has roots that
can be dried, powdered and
used, as they are in Euro 0„ as
a coffee substitute. RETath'd 'to
endive its leaves too d're -edible
and some varieties are cultived
as a salad delicacy. Early lo4
potions were also made from
chicory.
YARROW yields an.
astringent' liquid with which it
is said Achilles stanched his
wounds (hence its botanical
name, Achillea).
MUSK MALLOW mentioned
in the Bible was used also by
.American Indians and
Mexicans who Crushed the
leaves and • roots to make an
emollient juice to be used
medicinally; mixed with salt
and honey totreat fistulas in
the eyes and alleviate the sting
of the wasp.
. The ,MILKWEED, originally
a-nati'ye of Syria has a par-
ticularly interesting fldwer and
some young shoots are said to
be. . edible, resembling
asparagus in flavour. During
World 'War II the floss of the
full-blown pod was found to be
more buoyant than cork and
was used in lining, life jackets.
• The WILD ROSE, was '
probably used most extensively
for medicinal purposes in early
Greek times. It was r recom-
mended for infusions, 'tinc-
tures, salves and oils, to cure
maladies from- the plague to
hydrophobia, beauty creams
flavouring and candy: John
Gerard, in,,Herball in the 15th
century, commended, "a rdse
cons,.rve, strengthens the
heart". Recipe:.."Put them to
boil in.fair water...one pound of
roes. ..the which you shall' boil
for at least 3 or 4 hours, as you
would boil a piece of meat, until
they be very tender..add 4
pounds of fine sugar. ..let thein
boyle gently after the sugar is
put thereto, stirring with a
"wooden spatula...cool, stirring
until cold".
SCOTCH BROOM, now a
naturalized American plant,
growing along Cape Cod, was
used by the English, Greeks
and Roinans to make green
dye. In Bible times it was
eaten..",...and the—roots of the
broom are their food" (Job
30:4). Medieval herbalists used
it, combined with wine for liver
troubles and as a cure for
dropsy.
On the romantic side, we find
the shy little VIOLET with over
800 species, some members of
•which grow in every part of the
world including the Arctic and
Antarctic. One of the many
legends include the story of the
Greek goddess Persephone,
who was picking violets when
Pluto snatched her away into
the underworld; When Orpheus-
-was weary and sat down"to rest
on a mossy bank, violets sprung
up beside his flute. The
Athenians -loved it so much they
adopted' it as their national
symbol. The GreeksIfs' ed them
for garlands, decoratio40 and
perftime. In the Middle Ages
they were cOoked into puddings
and candies and even now
candied violets are a specialty
with sotne confectioners: The
Syrians and Turks used them in
sherbet, Irt Fratiee • they were
grdiivn at the nunnery at
Poitiers -and hundreds of tons

an Eurasian plant with an '
interesting. history. It was
known and feared in Bible
times. The American variety
resembles the thistle of
Scotland which, according to
legend, became a favourite
with -Scottish folk back in the
11thcentury when barefoot
Pa.nish invaders were ad-
vancing a surprise attack on a
Scottish camp and came upon a
meadow. of thistles. The
screams of the invaders when
. they Stepped on this thorny
plant roused the Scots and
saved their lives. •
