It's everybody's
business
-This week is Mental Health Week.
Everybody revels in gbod physical
health, but not •many give much con-
- sideration to the blessing of.. good
mental health. It is something people
just don't think about.
For many 'long years, persons with
mental diseases were shut away and
forgotten. Their families were shamed.
Their lives were secret. Their outlook
was hopeless.- They were 'doomed.
Thankfully, those dark ages are gone
forever.
While mental illness is now treated in
modern, sunlit hospitals with countless
cures reported every day and the
future brightening every minute, the
various mental diseases continue to
frighten thelaymen. People can,accept
heart, disease or cancer or kidney
ailments with much greater ease than
they can take the news of mental
breakdown.. Somehow the simplest
mental disease remains appalling and
even.repulsiveto many, many people.
They would still rather forget it than
deal with it.
This aria is indeed fortunate to, have
an • institution 'like Goderich
Psychiatric Hospital so nearby. Many
mental health needs are met there;
many people of all ages are helped
there;, many, many return to society .
happy and well -adjusted after . only
short-term treatment. The track
records are improving. It is truly '41a
modern medical miracle every bit as
marvell4s as the most intricate
surgery.
One of the greatest assets to GPH is
the community which surrounds it, -As
with all patients in any hospital,
.continued contact with the outside
world is as much a part of the cure as
drugs 'and dressings. Too often, though,
.psychiatric patients lack this vital link
with people. In a sense, they are still
shut away- and forgotten.
Mental illness can strike anyone
anytime. Like so many physical
sicknesses, -mental illnessis no
respecter of persons. It could happen to.

only protect your own mental well-
being, but help and assist those who •
are already suffering to get back on

many ways can help. If you think
•
you want to get involved, simply,pitk-
up the telephone and call GPH to offer
yourself. You will be^glad you did.

A mass meeting for all
bicyclists and citizens -who are
interested in having the streets
of Goderich put in proper
condition will be held in theo
Court' House this Friday
evening. The best means for
securing the needed im-
provement and appointing a '
'deputation to wait on the town
council immediately -and
present their views. The
meeting promises to be'a big
one.
Some action should be taken
to have managements made for
,the conducting and
• arrangement of the bathing
house during the coming
season. In past seasons the
town has sadly neglected .this
very important branch of our
beautiful summer resort.
Travellers, tourists and
summer visitors should not be •
allowed to come here and go
away declaring Goderich .had
made false statements about its
bathing facilities. Action should
be taken now to put the house in
order. Business is business.

with stealing a sorrel mare
from her stable in Mitchell last
February. She was the only,
witness in court and stated that
the boy had traded horses for
her and -that the animal he had

belonged to her. She swore that
her son broke into the stable

for one of his own.The boy said
all was false that the'horse he

The liquor. laws of this province have
been, according to many people, an- •
tigita'red and hopelessly outdated for
some time. Now that the Ontario
government' is 'attempting to do "
something about it, there is much
discOssion concerning the wisdom of it
all.
First the legal drinking age was,
lowered from 21 years to 18 years. It
. made sense too, in a great, many ways.
If an 18 year-old could die for his
country - if that was what was
demanded.of him, then surely an 18 -
year -old should also have the privilege
• to bend the elbow just like the other
soldiers did. Only thing was, there was
no war, no need to die at the hands of
the enemy. At least not at this time.
But it seemed like a logical, sensible
argument. A prOper analogy.
Others said today's youth are more
mature and better informed at 18 years
of age than .wee their parents and ,
• grandpa.rents. Eighteen year olds were
drinking anyway. Chances are that if
they could drink legally, they would
drink less. The excitement of breaking

It has since had the lines
