to London to be judged from 600

oterich PUC wants council's
direction on highway widening
The Goderich PUC asked
town council Monday night
'• what they wanted the utility to
do regarding street lighting and "
underground wires along High-
• way 21. Evert Middel and Dave
Ralston met with council
asking for direction in . the
PUC's responsibilities kir the
highway widening project.
Council had requested the
PUC to consider burying the
hydro lines along the roadway
leaving the street lights the
.way they are until construction
on the widening actually b.egan.
The ,aim was to try to get as
much ,of the work as possible
out of the way in an attempt to
shorten the construction time.
PUC manager Dave Ralston
told council that the whole
project, burying the wires and
installing the lights, would cost
the town about $80,000. He said
the Utility had the time now
because of a shortage of sub-
division development to get the
work done and rather than do it
twice they would prefer to do
both jobs this summer.
' "We can do the wires this
year but if council could , see
their way to purchasing they
street lamps and poles -we could
install them and delay billing
(Intended for last week)
construction costs until
RJaanisuatorn.yof 1976," suggested
The purchase of the poles and
lamps combined with the
materials needed for burying
the lines would require council
to spend $50,000 this year
leaving the remaining $30,000
for payment after January
1976. Mr. Ralston suggested to
council that they use cement
poles for the street lights,. He
said steel or aluminum poles
would cost an extra eight or
nine thousand dollars.
Mayor Deb Shewfelt asked if
the project, would have to be
undertaken regardless of
whether or not Highway 21 was
widened. He referred to the
condition of the wires and,
lamps along the highway,
suggesting they may need
replacement.
Mr. Ralston replied that the
street.lighting was in a terrible
state and that the wires were
substandard. He said they had
been neglected because of the -
possibility of removing them to
facilitate the -widening project.
Reacting to a suggestion that
the ordering of the equipment
wait until after budget time to
see if money was available Mr.
