Keeping Goderich "Green
and Clean" was adequately
demonstrated ' last Friday. by
300 lively youngsters , who
whizzed about ' like somany
gremlins and made everything
they touched and everywhere
they went,' look like .new, at
least - "Green and Clean".
'These youngsters. deserve to
be thanked by all of us, because
without their enthusiasm very
little would have been ac-
complished.. Arbor Day was a
new adventure for these young
people and I'rn sure the lesson
learned from • it will contribute
greatly to their becoming
better citizens.
At the luncheon for the near
frozen ' grown-ups, later that
day, Jack Riddell , remarked
that he didn't know )`tow greatly
the affair impressed the
children on THAT"day but it
would always stay in their
memory and be one of the great
things they recall of their young
school days, when they were
older and perhaps - gray.
The luncheon sponsored by
the Bank of Montreal, was a
real treat where you met your
-friendly M.P.P. • and Don Reid
from the Department of
Culture and Recreation.
Elsa Haydon was given
credit for sparking the event
which everyone hoped would
continue each yearas_,ARBOR
DAY;._.-_ .

" Dear Editor,' . a
• Farmers in. New/ Brunswick
who 'were' still holding large
stocks of unsold potatoes were
understandably concerned
when McCain ,Foods Ltd: of
Florenceville was granted a
federal import permit to bring
in 100,000 barrels of potatoes
from Maine . for processing at
the Grand Falls plant.. Potato
stocks in the province, were 38
per cent above one year earlier
levels on.Feb. lst. The variety
which' McCain's required was
available locally, farmers said.
- Telegrams were sent to
Agriculture •Minister Eugene
Whelan and R.A. Greehe of
Agriculture Canada's Fruit and
Vegetable Division by the
National Farmers Union
executive secretary. Mr.
Whelan was questioned .in the
House of Commons on the
import permit, and on Feb. -14
McCain'shalted imports.
\On March 27, Agriculture ,
Minister Eugene Whelan an-
nounced a special stabilization"
plan _ to aid eastern potato
growers. Beginning Apr. -1 the
government was to pay eastern
potato farmers $1.67 per cwt.
for. all Canada No. 1 potatoes
sold during the balance of the
season. "Added to the current
market price of $1.10 per cwt. in
N.B. and . P.E.I., the release
said, "the support payment -
would result in a total return to
producei's of about $2.77 per
cwt."
No sooner had the program
come into effect when the
market price dropped to as low
as .45c per cwt.
fn other other words the trade was
ripping off the program just as
the meat packers did in the .7c
per pound beef subsidy
program and stand once again
to gain the major benefit of
federal subsidies.

THE MAN TO SEE IS
the children of the future will
- thank you for it
A ' nice surprise at the lun-
. cheon was the birthday cake -
with candles yet - for our Mayor.
Deb Shewfelt. 'Tho he wouldn't
dis.cuss the number of years we
all hope he has many many
more.
Well, the big affair the GDCI
dance has come and gone and
the anguish and excitement of
preparation probably forgotten
BUT there is one person who
will think of it many times, with
mixed emotions - but with a
'grin -, for many years to come*
and that is our genial Editor,
.Shirley. Some flay 'she might
write a book - and it will be an
infi.
Anotherteresting thneing in -
the future is
our Recreation Complex which
may take two or three years of
preparation, planning and co-
operation. But it IS needed,
perhaps your children aren't
deprived of hours for swim-
ming or skating etc., but many
you, perhaps, never think about
are on the sidelines, not able to
participate and ten years from,
now think of the inadequacy of
our facilities for that time.
Let's THINK about it. The
centre of our town is the only.
real place fqr such a facility
and proper parking would be a
relief for all those living near
the arena now.
The baseball and soccer
fields and such sports would
continuewhere they are - more
or less, and everyone will enjoy
the facilities. Don't you think it
is terrible that we must travel
thirteen to fifteen miles to an
indoor swimming` pool? The
fact that it istaxed to its limit
proves it was badly needed.
So, for the 'next couple of
years help all you can towards
our owl complex.
G.L•T. Play is THIS week -
got your reservations?
May 2 the S.A.Y.C. sponsor a
dance in Auburn Community
Hall. Good music and fun.
Music nite May 7 at GDCI is a
must.
Love,
Martha.
