HPSSB meeting Discuss those PD days By Susan White Trustees of the Huron' Perth Roman Catholic separate' school board narrowly defeated motion to keep the number of p ofessional development days wi hin the system to six, the sa e as last year, instead of the ten that director of educ : tion, - John . Vintar recom elided. yr. ,Vintar gave board members the dates:' and ten- tative agendas for the days, along with a list of what was done in the system's PD days last year. TIOays for this year were set by a Committee of four' . principals. Trustees note that one day, September 19, is the date of the Stratford Fall Fahr. "What do PD days have to d9 with fair- s?" Wingham trust e William Kinahan asked. There is a lot of complaining in Wingham about children not beingable to at- tend the Teeswater Fali Fair, he said, and suggested that perhaps the board should take a look at a lis4,.Of'area fairs. The PD r-iy is on the'Strat- ford Fall Fair day so that children won't have to miss any more school than necessary, Stratford trustee Ron Marcy said. Stratford pupils already get a half day off to attend the .fair. • Mr. Vintar said the ministry allows a maximum of 12 PD days. He said the two adjacent public boards are still working on their dates, • so' the days couldn't be co-ordinated, "S-ometimes I feel we should go where we're going .and not always look. to the other, boards", ' he said. . When trustees -raised the question of savings in busing and crossing guard costs if the PD days were the same in all three systems, Mr. Vintar said "We're flexible enough that we can make. changes if there's a saving to-'» ake mine milk BY DAVE SYKES If by chance a gentleman of colossal statuFe should saddle up to the bar beside you and' demand in a husky voice that the bartender serve up around of milk, please do not falloff your bar stool. It .has been hinted that proposed changes in liquor regulations will require bars to serve a v5riety of drinks which will include milk and coffee. It may be difficult to vision entertaining friends wt1t jug of.the teeth and hone ' builder, but Ontario Federation of Agriculture president, Gordon Hill believes that milk in the bar is a good idea, ' • "Bars are convenient, convivial places for people' to congregate but alternatives to alcohol should be available, - particularly in a highly mobile society that depends great.ly— on the automobile," Hill said. • The Addiction Research Foundation claims'that the trend in the past few years has been toward going out to drink in a bar or pub. T its is undoubtedly particularly true for younger people^but it has also become more apparent that the older people are beginning to follow this trend. ' "Alternative beverages are becoming more necessary as more people visit bars and drive," Hill said. "Availability in • bars should boost demand for milk.among adults." But who knows: the strategy could pay off in the number of people who will start drinking milk. If bars ,were the only place that you could buy,m ilk it couldn't help but be a hit, but then you would have to show your proof of age at the dairy. Could you imagine young 'people going out on weekend gravel runs with a three quart pitcher pack? ,\\\\\\ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ ♦ / ♦ ♦ ♦ i i \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\%»% \\\\\\ 1e" CULBERT'S BAKERY 1975 "THE HOME OF TASTY PASTRY" 49 -West St., Goderich, 524-7941 BIRTHDAY WEDDING AND ANNIVERSARY CAKES CAM SPECIALTY Cherry and Chop Suey Loaves Fresh Daily 75c ea. Vintar. Mr, Vintar said he did. PD days are, held at the county, zone and school level.•. Trustee Francis Hicknell asked if there Wait a need for more county • wide • days. - "Not really," 1\,..;r, •Vintar replied.. "Specific areas, like the metric' system, are better treated in small groups," ' Trustee Shantz 'suggested that the first PD day, scheduled 'for Sept. 8, he held the first day of school, Sept. 2 'and "let the kids stay home another day." "We get a lot of flack on these professional'• development days", he said, and,'suggested the flack would increase if children were only in schooi four days and then were off for. a PD day. . The September 8 PD day is to organize the school placement of children and trustee Ron Marcy suggested that teachers wouldn't know the problems of individual students on the first day of school. Mr. Vintar said the first, day`of school had been suggested as a PD day last year, and the hoard had voted it down: Another PD day, for reporting to parents, is 'scheduled for November 28. "The majority of parents work and can't get to school in mid• .afternoon: Teachers will have to come out at night even 11 it means more work. We have to get more communication between teachers, parents and the hoard.", Mr. Shantz said. Trustee John O'Drowsky said there are both'a"fiernoon and .evening appointments- for parents. Some can attend during the day and some at night, giving more time to both groups, the director of education suggested. Mr. •$hantz'•s motion to limit the PO days to six was defeated by a vote of -5. A new motion by Trustee Marcy to accept the ten days as presented was passed by a vote of six to five, with Trustee Hicknell ab- staining. , The vote was recorded and for the ten days were trustees Drowsky, Kinahan, Connolly, -Crowley, March and Haid. Voting aginst were trustees Geoffrey, Looby, Vere, Shantz and Fleming. I ' ' GREE.N ACRES .'i i SPORT PARACHUTE CENTRE (Port Albert, Hwy No. 21) OPENING MAY 17, 1 97 5 Location: Hwy 21 - 9 mi.
