In spite of Mother Nature's cantankerous " moods the Golden Trumpeteer of Spring, the Daffodil, is about to declare open warfare on further win- tery • blasts and march in her troops of stately tulips clad in gay tunics, with haughty heads held high. Like the rose, tulips have played quite a role in h4istory, painting, song and,the whims of mankind. In 1554 an ambassador to the Sultan of Constantinople was amazed to find a strange and • beautiful flower the Turks called Tulipan in the gardens of Adrianople. He was especially surprised and delighted to find that these lovely flowers sprang out of the cold earth at a season when other flowers were still dormant. He sent tulip seeds and bulbs to Vienna, which may have been the first importation of WEDNESDAY, APRIL '39TH IS THE FINAL DAY OF DISCOUNT • DAVE'S MONEY -SAVING SPRING F1X7UP clothes and a prize silver vase worth thousands of florins • The fever spread to France and England where they were sold singly and the nrk ' determined by the weight of the bulb. Famous artists were commissioned to paint pictures of the tulip; costly garments were embroidered' with tulip motifs and Europe's wealthiest gardens were magnificently clacj in tulips in early. Spring. There was even exploitation by some of the poorest people who made fortunes on bulbs that were either non-existent or never, delivered., Some even mortgaged their homes ' to speculate on this flower. However, like most "manias" b the excitement cooled and in the Spring of 1637 there was a •great slump in sales. Many people lost for- tunes, some went insane, others committed suicide, etc. Although prices of bulbs fell, the demand for tulips has continued to grow down to the present time. Possibly the first tulips grown on this continent were brought by Dutch settlers who arrived in the New World about 1640, settling in the present state of New York in the USA. Tulips need cold winters and are very easy to grow but not quite as permanent as:' daf- fodils. -Unfortunately, tulips have an awkward stage after they bloom when their blooms slowly sink to the ground and turn yellow. Your first impulse is to cut the unsightly foliage and discard it. IF YOU DO YOU WILL ROB THE BULB OF IMPORTANT NUTRIENTS - FOR NEXT YEAR'S BLOOM. Wait until the foliage turns brown and pulls away easily before you remove it. Try to keep seed pods pieked off after your bulbs bloom. They rob the strength from the plant. — • Fertilizer is not needed , at, planting time, but if you wish you may add da slow acting fertilizer such as bone meal of 5-10-5 fertilizer after foliage has been ;trimmed back, but do avoid fresh manure.
