Concern 'about adequate
religious instruction by
qualified teachers in Catholic
schools in Huron and Perth ,and
in the province was expressed.
by the Huron "'Perth Roman
Catholic separate school board
at their meeting Monday night
in Seaforth,.
Trustees, who returned last
week from attending the
Ontario Separate School~
Trustees •Associa'ti•ot • con-
vention in Toronto, reported
that a resolution from the local
Ward, recommending an in-
formation program in high
schools and universities to
encourage Roman - Catholic
stridents to become teachers,
was passed by the association.
The board initiated 'the
resolution because they were
concerned about a .shortage of
Roman Catholic teachers.
A program is being
developed by Catholic
educators to teach religion in
•the provinces teachers'
colleges, trustees learned at the
k
teacher s
convention}. A report on the
courses will soon be presented
to the ministry, of education,
trustee HowardShantz said and
he called the move "the bright
spot of the whole converence."
Adding to Mr. Shantz' report,
director of education John
Vintar said the religious
'education program will • be
relevant to students as they are
now. He said the feeling of
those on the religious education
ainel at the ,conference was
that parents have primary
responsibility but a' good•
example by teachers has great
bearing in giving children a ,
religious background.
The course for teachers must
be voluntary, because it's a
university course and must be
general to a certain extent in
order to qualify for provincial,
' funds, Mr. Vintar said. It will
be a 50 hour long credit course
and will include one semester
en theory an one on teaching
methods, the director said.
Mr, Vintar said ' course
content will include
CathoUcisxn, G!Rd's ;reyntiop§hip
to man, faith, de1MhWnity, and
Christian morality, Re Called
the course "encouraging'? "We,
need people versed in the new
facets of religion," he said
Trustee Shantz said that in
the 1960's the attendance of
Catholic students at 'religion
_courses in Teachers Colleges
dropped off. Changes in the
church have caused confusion,
he said. "Years ago we were
taught the Butler catechism
and are not prepared for
changes," he said, and cited
eating meat on Friday and
attending mass on Saturday
night as things which were not
acceptable a few years ago,.
The board will encourage
teachers presently on staff to
attend the courses when they
become available. Other
trustees reported on sessions
they had attended at the
separate school trustees
convention.
Vince Young of Goderich said
he was "disappointed and

'Professional development
days for teachers carne under
discussion vat Monday night's
meeting of the Huron -Perth
Roman Catholic school board ih
Seaforth.
Director of education, John
Vintar, told trustees that a
committee of four principals
are working out a schedule for
the days and holidays in'1976,
when he was presenting a.
ministry of . education
memorandum on, the '1975-76
schbi51'yeat Mid h6Tiday5'tt3 the
board. L
"I wonder about What goes on
-at'. these professional
development days", Goderich
trustee Vince•. Young com-
mented. He said he's heard
questions and criticism in-
cluding some from teachers
who are not with the separate
board. 4
Trustee Don Crowley
suggested, holding professional
development days on fair days.
....,.`}`-kids are out, the teachers
can ,be developing them-
selves", he said and suggested
September 19, the date 'Of
Stratford's Fall Fair,
specifically. , ,
;On a 'suggestrYn ' from St.
Marys Trustee ' John
O'Drowsky, the' board decided
to • ask the principal's com-
mittee to bring their plan on
professional development days
to the board. • •
Trustees felt the mid -winter
break holiday should. be onthe,
same date for all area school
boards, Following a request by
trustee Michael Connolly, the
administration agreed to
contact, the public boards in the'
two counties and "discuss the
dates with there:
Plans for a summer school on -
religion to be held from July21-
25 at St. Ambrose School in
Wingham were announced by *-
Father Nolan of Sacred Heart
Parish in Wingham in a letter
to the board.
Father Nolan said the week's
school could involvle Catholic
children who are not attending
Catholic schools now, as well as
those who are and non-Catholic
students, with the, approval• of
their ministers.
The school would focus on
.Christian living and would
attempt to .show residents that
a Catholic ... education is
available, and valuable. Most
of the students attending would
be- from 'the Blyth area, the
priest said.
Father Nolan asked the
board for approval of • the
project, 'including tran-
• sportation to the • summer
school and used of the school
facilities.
The Board's personnel and
transportation eommittees will
look into making arrangements
for buses and with the school's
custodian and report to the next
board meeting.
Canada exporter' $1 billion
more in foodstuffs in 1974 than
it imported, Without the large
sale of farm products, the
dollar value of our imports
would have been more than for
exports.
