Land Ihnits
concern for
everyone
The good earth is our
heritage. But we have defiled
and polluted too much of it for
too long.
How we use our land is now
becoming an urgent national
issue. In the near future, every
state is likely to adopt a state
land use program. -
Your Christmas Seal
Association is concerned about
the issue because careless land
use results in dirty air. Air
pollution contributes to lung
disease. The 'deterioration and
pollution of our environment
diminishes us all. Our misuse of
the land has created decaying
cities choked by congestion and
car exhaust, sprawling
speedways -and, decrepit -public --
transportation, vanishing
wilderness and open . spaces
which are closing fast,
.thoughtless-disposal-of-wastc,
crushing energy demands on
dwindling resources, and the
confinement of poor and
minority groups into urban
ghettos.
•.:Our cities and towns have
grown like Topsy, without.
rhyme or reason. It is believed
that land use development
must be organized and coor-
dinated to protect and polish
our now -tarnished heritage.
Only,75% of
teenagers
have smoked
What percentage of
teenagers have •never smoked
more than . a handful• • of
cigarettes in their lives?
Surprise. The answer is 75
percent.
An extensive 1974 survey
conducted by the MS. gover-
nment ' s National
Clearinghouse on Smoking and
Health also 'found that only 15.8
percent of teenagers, are
regular smokers. The per-
centage of. girls who smoke ha
inched up to that for boys,
What factors • influence
decisions about smoking? For
teenagers the most important
concern is "control of mY
future" Most ,teenagers want
to decide themselves what kind
ofa person 'to become and to
'shape their own lives. The next
most important factor . is
awareness of the effects Of
• smoking on health. The third
most significant factor, the
survey showed, is a concern for
nonsmokers' rights. There is a
growing feeling among
teenagers as well as adults that
people who do not smoke have
the right to breathe . clean air
which is not polluted with
cigarette smoke.
• Here, are some of the
fascinating findings :
- 77 percent think cigarette'
smoke is a form of air pollution.
- 87 percent feel smoking
harms teenagers.
-72 Percient4dis4gree
tar and nicotine cigarettes are
safe.
- 56percent are bothered
'1?ecause-manpadults=canit-stop-
smoking.
It just seems as 'if • all
teenagers everywhere are
smoking their heads off. They
aren't. And they have good
reasons not to.
To find. outnuke
reasons why most people, in-
cluding teenagers, don't
smoke, contact your Christmas
Seal Association. It's matter
of life and breath.,
