Comments reported by Douglas Tigert in the Financial 7 ; • hwa Post indicate that a growing problem of sameness is. plagueing retailers and shopping centres across the country. The problem he stated ,,is occurring on. two levels; 'commodity mix and store mix. The problem is frustrating 'consumers and new retailing Lddies_install Ladies Legion Auxiliary Branch No. 109 held its regular monthly meeting March 11, in the. Green Room with 67 members present. Two new members Cheryl Crawford and Gladys Willed were installed to , the Branch No. 109.Following a lengthy business meeting, -motions were passed to approve donations to R.C. L. Branch No. 109 Canadian Red Cross and Muscular Dystrophy. Donations for the _ salad Employees (continued from page 1 suggested that if the employee vehicles were parked off the Square more parking spaces would--be--proyided on the total, - area. This thinking prompted the equal ta.x scheme. taie Gower told the group, 'that he felt the project sounded good but he argued with the logic of the employee parking. He - said that most of the workers.parked on the inside of The Square because there Was no time limit and added that he personally would walk across the park to a store before he would take an inside- parking space in front - of the store he • was going to. "Parking inside The Square is not agreeable to a great triAny- people," he said. "I personally do not like the dif- ficult left hand turn and would park across the park from where- I wanted to go rather, than park on the inside." Jim Britnell 'said that the county employees - probably would be slighted by any new regulations restricting parking on The Square. He said they would not appreciate having to ' walk the extra 'distance to the court house but conceded that it would 'ProbTh?ly be good for Commission supper served by the Auxiliary at the Benefit Dance held at Saltford Valley Hall on •February 28, from all grape vine reportsr a substantial sum was realized to furnish this social -event. The Branch also wishes to inform everyone that the next 'community project will. be to promote the tulip bulb, sales. These bulbs are to be planted this fall to t elebrate the Legion's 50th Anniversary in 1976. (continued from page 1 would either he a large brawl or they would be obeyed." In his closing remarks Judge Carter expressed disap- pointment at the turnout because of remarks and opinions of 'people it appeared as if policing and vandalism in Goderich was 'a burning question in the minds of people'. „ , 'Every opportunity ' was given for people to express their opinions," J.udge Carter said. "The board now can only proceed on its own merits'." • •• most of them, himself included. Saturday parking suggested to the businessmen that the off- stropt employee parking would • be. beneficial,. They_ said that during the' weekend when416T employees are not parked on The Square there was ample room for customer parking. Jim . Britnell questioned' the need -for the amount of off- streelparking called for in the town's official plan. He said that to live up to the parking spaces required for square footage of business space as set . down in the plan would take , more land purchases than the town could afford in 50,,years. He added that with all the area potentially viable for off-street parking 'considered there'is stili a shortage of about 100 'spaces near The Square. "We should inyestigate cleaning up the backs of some of the stores and leasing the land for parking areas;" he said. The businessm,en agreedthat •there was a .need for taking • advantage of the space now available for parking but not for sale. They suggested that sone of the stores may even construct rear entrances to accomodate people parking off The Square. "We don't want - something for'nothing," said one businessman. "We' would 'like • the town to set a figure and plan needed for off street parking and beautification of the downtown area and come to us with the total that we haVe to pay. We don't want the public to get the impression that we want something for nothing." . The businessmen' -s association committee told the gathering that they still had not obtained approval front -their peers on • -dip4 idearrbtit• only. wanted to plant a little food for thought in the minds of the town council. •They said that the agreement would have to be ironed out to • everyone's satisfaction in the 1:tear future and then - acted on by both parties. • 21 , fts .p ,, 4 4, , • Plaza plans alternatives' witl have to be developed. Tigert prophesied that the trend could lead to the revival of the specialty boutique and to the use of price ,com- Petitiveness as a major weapon. He suggested, that the immediate need is a return to uniqueness or stores with a mix of merchandise that will draw customers from other centres. Such unique attractions as theatres, restaurants, skating rinks and night clubs could bring a shopping centre out of the stereo -typed image it has developed. With two plazas on the horizon in Goderich , those suggestions- -warrant careful evaluation. Bert Alexander of Suncoast Estates Ltd. told the Signal -Star that the shopping centre on Highway 21 will house 1210 tabusinesses. The number depends on the footage that each business will require. - Mr. Alexander expects to release the names of the tenants within the next week once the details have- been finalized. He is .confident that all bitsinesses wilLpe in the new building by September 15. , The major tennant, A and P had expected to open for business at the beginning of July but Mr. • Alexander estimates that that date could be pushed back to the end of that month. Rockledge Properties Ltd. who will be building the other plaza ..on their Highway 8 site have not yet begun con- structfOn. --Gord Smith of Rockledge said • that an , engineer has advised the company against construction because of the ground con- ditions. However construction is expected to begin once the ground is frost free. Mr. Smith stated -that ten- tatively his group would like to begin the first week in April. . The Rockledge plaza will house eight to ten businesses, again depending -on the footing required by each business, and although no tenants have been named ,Mr. Smith stated that there were 48 applications for space. .4.0 for fall °Inning gogpsixemplat •„ • • tr*****4114 SIONP.120 tkowtoadtPik"147="41= 4.1134 10....zzamematta4.41rm• tut okik.watw...s.it PluttirtlicuutC. .•,a0..4 3.4 .v, ILA.Ykx,.• , .. • 4.4 . • .„,,A.„.;,aq.,*•••,..
