Suncoast Atom All -stay's
'lose out to Kincardine
The Suncoast Estates Atom
411 -Stars lost their WOAA -
OMHA' Zone championship
finals, losing the best of three
series two games to one to
Kincardine last week,
-The Suns won 'the first game,
played in Lucknow on . Wed-
nesday, by a 3-1 score, but
Kincardine' tied the series with
a 4-3 win in Kincardine Thur-
sday. The deciding game was
played here Friday morning as.
part ' of Young Canada Week
and saw Kincardine squeak out
a 1-0 victory to take the series
-and the championship.
In the first game, the Suns
jumped off to a 3-0 first.period
lead on goals by David East-
wood, Joey Morrissey and
Darrell Graham. Brad Arm-
strong and Denis Kerr were
credited with assists on the
second and third Goderich
goals.
Kincardine got one back to
break Suns' goalie.. Jeff
benomme's shutout with less
than one minute remaining in
the game.
Paul Emmerton scored the
goal on a goalmouth scramble.
In Kincardine Thursday, the
'Beavers turned the tables on
the Suns, scoring three goals
before the Suns replied.
Bruce Murray was the
marksman on . two of 'the
Beavers .goals while Sean
"Leach got the other:
The Suns came back to tie the
score with goals by Joey
---Morrissey, Darrell Graham
and David Gallo-.
Jim • Mather's' and Brad
Armstrong assisted on the first
one, Tim Lassaline and Kevin
. Campbell helped on the second,
and Darrell Graham and Joey
Morrissey assisted on Gallow's
goal.
It looked as though the Suns
had taken over, but the Beavers
scored on a powerplay with just
under five minutes remaining
and the Goderich team couldn't
get the equalizer.
The deciding. ,game in
Goderich Friday was a thriller
all the way, with a large Young
Canada . week crowd being
° treated to fine end .to end
hockey throughout the game.
The only goal of the game
came in the third period when
Kincardine captain Paul
Emmerton lifted a rebound
over a sprawled Jeff Denomme
in the Goderith goal.
The win was a well-earned
one for the Beavers. They
finished fifth In ' th` regular
schedule, but- - knocked off
second place Hanover in the
first round of the playoffs. In
the semi-finals' they ousted1the
third place- finishers,
Walkerton, and then capped it
off by taking tbe;charnpionship
from the Suns who`had finished
first in the regular schedule.
The. week was not a total.loss
for coach Richard Madge's
Suns, however. They received
word that the Suns had been
awarded the most sport-
smanlike team award in the
Brussels Optimist Atom
Tournament, in which theSun's
were finalists in the 'A' division
last week.
There was a total of thirty
Atom teams from all across
Ontario competing '1 in this
tournament, so it is an award
that coach Madge, manager
John Bakker and the whole
team can be justly proud of.
'A representative of .'4 -the
Brussels tournament is
scheduled to be present to

The trophy is the fourth'won
by the Suns this season. Others
were. from the championship of
the Arthur tournament, the
consolation championship ,in
the Kincardine Winter Games
and the runner-up trophy in the
Teeswater tournament.
The Suns defeated Blyth, the
WOAA "E" champions, in an
exhibition game in Blyth on
Monday night by a score of 6-2.
Darrell Graham scored four
goals for the Goderich team

olborne workshop
Urban rural differences
Incompatability between
'farm and rural ` non-farm._
residents was the, major issue
raised at, the agricultural
planning workshop held in
Carlow last Thursday.
Colborne township residents
attending the meeting .attacked.
the urbanite or rural non-farm
resident as a cause for the price
escalation of land and the
possible deterrent'of expansion
of farming operations in the
future.
Many residents raised the
point that the purchase of land
by non-farm residents was
causing a rapid rise in the price
of farmland. The lakeshore and
lands adjacent to rivers, which
were purchased for recreation
sites, was also cited as a major
factor for the • escalation of land
prices:
Some eitizens expressed
concern for the future of con-
centrated farm -operations
unless something is done about
the number of noht€arm
residents ,moving into the
township. They believe that the
relationship between intensive
farm bperations and rural non-
farm residents is simply in-
compatible., ..•
The 'point was raised 'that
perhaps' the Code of Practice
protects the urban dweller in
the country more than the
farmer. If a farmer severs a
portion of his land and a,non-
farm resident builds a house on
what
la_nsl, there can be no in-
tensivearm operations within
the maximum of 1000 feet of
that resident.
Some farming residents then
raised the point, that unless
' rough land or marginal land is
very large the provisions of the
code of practice could in effect
affect ° several "surrounding
intensive farm operations
depending on the location. This
would be the case if the
marginal land sold to an ur-
banite bordered on several
adjacent farms.
" Also drainage system outlets
are often located in the rough
land which is also imnporta'nt to
the farm operations. It can also
act as insurance against flood
control, erosion and drainage
control. Because of the high
agricultural capability of the
land the use of that land
becomes increasingly im-
portant. The selling of
marginal lands could stifle the
utilization of productive land

and reduce . the flexibility of
farm operations.
What the workshop pointed
out was that farm residents of
Colborne Township are con-
cerned about urban develop-
ment in the area and whether
the two can exist in the same
area. However residents of the,
township are now aware that
there will be no easy decisions
assists.
'Kurtis Whitfield and Bruce
Hunking were ' the Blyth
scorers.
The Suns received word that
they will be competing in the
WOiA Atom Grand Cham-
pionship tournament as the 'A'
champions. The tournament
will be held in Arthur on April
12and 13.
