VICTORIA ST.-BENMILLER
by REV, LEONARD WARR UNITED CHURCH CHARGE
I have just finished reading
i en Anderson's book
'malayan Heartbeat, the
story of Dr. and Mrs. Geoffrey
Ir. Lehmann and their work in
their hospital at Herbertpur,
India.
I was very impressed' with
Dr. Lehmann'S way of com-
bining his Christian witness
with his medical and surgical
work.
When asked about this, he
said, "We are not medical
missionaries; we are
missionary medics".
I was overjoyed to read the
record of some of the ac-
complishments of these
dedicated people and t9. realize
that they are declaring their
stand on a matter that has
concerned roe. for a con-
siderable time. When it is
mentioned that Christians
should witness to Jesus' saving
power, so many people say that

our lives -should show that we
are €ollowers of Christ and if we
so live (actions speak I&ider
than words)- then there should
be. no necessity for talking
abol4t it.
Dr. Lehmann pointed out that
the longer he had a patient
under his care, the more he
could explain •the love of God
and His wonderTul plan of
1 lvation. The"doctor lamented
the occasions when the patient
was there only a day or so and
thus missed the opportunity of
hearing, with convincing
effect, the gospel message.
.„„effect,
home to me the
fact that often, in life, we touch.
other people's lives just
momentarily. We might do
them a kindness or, it.might be
that, even though strangers,
our display of gentleness and
concern has lifted them from
despair.
If we do the kindly deed .and
say nothing, we are taking the
credit ourselves but, on the
other hand, if we, while ap-
preciating the thanks, explain
"Not I, but Christ", we will be
giving the credit to God, where
it rightfully belongs, and at the
same time giving our word of
witness. How often have we lost
the opportunity of spreading
the goodnews?
Remember when Jesus sent
His disciples. out (as related in
the 10th chapter of St. Mat-
thew),, He instructed them to go
preach, heal, cleanse, raise the
dead, cast out devils. Even then
Jesus was anxious that .-the
people should be told about the

physically.
That was an experience of
limtted_duration but,. later, for
the rest of their- lives the •
disciples were challenged
wherever they were, and they
. were assured that they, thru'
His power, would be able to do
even greater things. than He
had accomplished during His
short earthly journey.
Down ;through the centuries
since, that same challenge'lias
come to His devoted_ followers.
Let us examine ourselves!
Where do we stand? Is Jesus
really our Savior and Lord?'
Are we really in earnest.
about the kingdom? Or are we
merely. good .living . people,
doing a little work in, the church
and cornmunity,"but not sure of
our relationship with God and,
therefore, unaware of any'
emergency to speak to others of .
human heart? If we have made
a full commitment of our lives
to His service, His praise will
be forever on our lipsand
sharing the gospel message will
be a privilege and' joy that we
cannot withold.
"O Zion, haste thy mission high
fulfilling,
To tell toall the world that God
is light;
That He who made all nations is
not willing
One soul should perish, lost in
shades of night."

Evil revails When Good Men Do Nothing
is
The other day I had a little
fire on my kitchen stove. Some
fat, which had been spilled
previously, had run into the cup
under the element and as it
became .increasingly hot it
suddenly blazed up reaching'
the cupboard above it.
Reaching for, my salt dish, I
threw a couple of handfuls over
the flames which immediately
subsided. Had the salt not been
So, handy I might have had a
more serious experience.
Once when Jesus was
speaking to his followers he
said, ',Toil are the earth's salt.
But if the salt, should become
tasteless, what can make it salt,
aagain?-lt . is..completely ..,u eless.,
and can only be thrown out of
doors and stamped under foot."
By uttering these words,
Jesus provided the World with
an expression which has
become the best, compliment
than can be bestowed, on
anyone. When we want to stress
the value of someone's worth•
we say, "She is the. salt of the
,.earth."
Salt in Jesus time was highly
valued and had many uses. It
was and still is used primarily
to preserve, purify and flavour
food ... and also, as I found:out,
it can be most helpful as a fire
extinguisher.
It was likely these very
qualities , that Jesus was
referring to when he stated,
"You are the salt of the earth."
Let us consider the preser-
vative quality. Our . grand-
parents knew by rubbing salt
into meat it, could be kept from
going bad. There is an . an-
tiseptic value of salt that keeps
decay, at bay. Surely that's one
reason Jesus wants us to be like
salt rubbed into society to keep
it from going rotten.
In this day and age that's
some challenge! Yet, each of us
has an obligation to be the,
cleansing -antiseptic right
where we. happen to be.
Sometimes, rubbing in the salt-
won<t make us very popular,
but as Wm. Barclay points out,
we should be..people who by our
presencedefeaat corruption and
make it easier'for-others to be
good. . _
•
Then too, if Christians are the
salt of the earth they 'should be
an example of purity. We live in
a world that continues to lower
or abandon standards of
honesty, integrity, diligence in
work, and moral behavior. The
salty Christian should hold unto
God'•s guidelines and+ by
example show purity in speech,
actions and thoughts.
•In somewhat the same way,
-we Christians should be ex-
tinguishing the • fires of
corruption that abound in our
world. Right where we're living
we should' be throwing salt on
malicious gossip, dishonest
deals and the many other evil
practices that go on right under
our noses.
Of course, we tend to think of
salt mainly as a seasoning.
Wha.t,salt is to food Christianity
should be to life. It should make
life more flavourful, zesty and
attractive. Unfortunately,.
many Christians are so blah, so
flavourless that it's not much
wonder Jesus said they were
like salt that had lost its flavour
... good for nothing. The world
looks at drab, uninteresting
people who call themselves
Christians and sees no value in
Christianity.
Christ pulls no punches. He
tnakes it quite clear if we are
not fulfilling the role of 'salty' '
people we are net carrying out
