East side story
While Councillor Leroy Harrison
spent some time Monday tevening
during the regular council session
fighting for the interests of residents in
the "east end" of Goderich where
roads are concerned, Councillor Dave
Gower beside him and Councillor Elsa
Haydon across the table must have telt'
especially gratified that the Parks
Committee is endeavouring to
establish a new and exciting
playground in the eastern part of town.
If all goes well, the park will"be°the
first of its kind in'Goderich. It will be a
truly "community" „park for plans call
for a portion of the playground
equipment to be skillfully and
imaginatively constructed' of
Goderich-type products. There may
not be a Champion grader to crawl in,
around and through, but that is exactly
the" -kind of thing at which the parks
committee in co-operation with
recreation director Mike Dymond are
aiming.
This "creative playground" will be
discussed, at a public meeting Thur
sday, March 27. It is hoped that many ---
"east side" citizens will show B)oth;`-
.their interest and their appreciation by ---
being present at that meeting
1,30't getting back, and roads
in Goderich - and the five-year plan
proposed by the Works -• and,
Engineering Committee - it appears -
that Councillor Harrison has a
legitimate complaint. To be certain the
largest portion of•#road work. is slated
for the south-west part of Goderich or
perhaps even' more accurately, the
newest sector 'or the COMA llurr11y.
And Councillor Harrison is right
again when he pointed out that some'
roads in the eastern section of town are'
little bette'r,than dirt trails and really
not adequate ,to handle the heavy inr•
dustrial traffic that passes over them
daily in that area.
It is purely and simply a matter of
priorities .., and to a lesser degree
maybe, a case of the squeaking wheel
getting th6.grease.
Road chairman Dave Gower's point
was well taken when he said that if he
had (another million dollars in his
budget, he would'be'happy to spend it.
.But he hasn't got ent tugh money to do
nearly all that needs to be done and so
he must rely on the recommendations
of the tpwn engineer and the town
'foreman as to which roads most need
repairs and or reconstructing. He has
done just that,.
Goderich can be compared.,to a
gangling youngster who grows so
.quickly his parents don't know whether
to buy hew prts..to cover his ankles,
new
new shirts to .extend over his wrists or
new.shoes'to allow' room for -enlarging
feet. The budget won't stretch to
provide everything all at once. ,
Th,- • o► • • - _• i.s-txy
"sportation and 1 Communications in
terisive roads study (sewers, traffic
count, road base etc.) should be
enlightening. In the meantime, . the
`road committee can do little more than
attempt to spend moneyas prudently
as possible, keeping in mind the overall
good of. .the greatest number of
Goderich citizens.
.
Priorities in doubt
Boards of education in both Huron.
and Bruce Counties experienced a
distinct shock last vyeek when they
learned'that the Ministry of E4'geation
had answered with a flat ''no" _their
requests for all capital spending on the
improvement or,. expansion .of school
facilities.
Huron had planned to spend $900,000
for renovations at the Exeter public
school, needed additions to the Turn -
berry. and Brussels schools and the
instalation-of a•mini-corriputer--in'the---
Exeter secondary school. The $ .5
million requested by the Bruce board
would: have -been used chiefly to
provide for the steady influx of
students created by the Douglas Point
power project -a situation created
certainly not by the county board of
education, but rather byanother sector
of the provincial' governmer'tt.
Even a dull taxpayer can understand
that when ' money is ° scarce some
curtailment of ,public spending ,is
advisable. What is. truly shocking in
this instance is the flat turn -down of all
.propos'al•s in the two counties, regar-
dless of the needs which exist. You can
be sure that members df these boards
of education had ,spent many hours
determining what was needed within
their counties before the plans were
submitted to Queen's Park.
How the taxpayers of this province.
(and this country, as Well)" would love
to "exposeour administrations in
