"Off I went with my helper
and we checked and rechecked
our measurements,, re-
calculated the cubic contents
and again approached Captain
JVlax. 'Max,' I said, 'I have re-
measured the 'scows and
calculated the capacity of each,
andj still say that Number One
holds 609 cubic yards and No.
Two holds 603.'
Max was very patient, and
looked at me with a tolerant
gaze and said, `Johnny, I built
them scows, and they were
supposed to hold 200 cubic
yards apiece, andhen you

at it.' And how right he was. I
went hack, t my figures and
found that in my effort to air
my newly acquired education I
had ' mistakenly divided the
total number of cubic feet that
each scow held by nine (square
yards) instead of 27 (for cubic
yards).
"Under Max' careful tuition I
progressed from deckhand to
fireman, to oiler, and even-
tuaily°to operator, but I never
made captain; though I learned
a lot from him, there were
other machines I had to learn
about.

The Ontario Secondary
School Teachers' Federation is
directing a major study of what
secondary schools are doing
and what they should hedoing
in the future. The Federation is
-.spending about .. $75,000 to
survey actual conditions and
sugges ions or
improvement, with -the results
to be published in book form in
the Summer. '
''The projectbegan a.year ago
with the idea that, some group
independent of the Ministry or
Education should attempt to
develop recommendations for
.the development ofsecondary
education., Teachers 'know
what's happening in schools
better than any , other group,
but they rarely have the time to
draw back, to gain perspective '
on the long • term effects of
change.
The real question is whether
we are doing the best things for
the.. generation who will be
Ontario's and Canada's leaders
and producers before the year
2,000. To answer that question,'
OSSTF has surveyed its entire
membership, has invited briefs.
-from industry, labour, from
groups of all sorts, and has
sponsored a series of public
forums throughout the province
'to get the thoughtful opinion of
the public.
So far, the response has been
good. It shows -that there •is a
body of opinion on'the'purposes

Ontario Revenue Minister
Arthur Meen announced that
his ministry's Tax Credit
Information Centre will remain
open evenings and on weekends
during the months of March
and April, in response to, the
growing number of inquiries
handled by the centre.
From Mondayeto Friday, the
In;ormation Centre will be open
from 8:30 a. m...to .8:00 p.m. On ,
Saturdays and Sundays, the
hours will be noon to`5:00 p.m.

Mr, Meen explained that oax

Ontario Tax Credit form,
together with a completed_
federal income tax return, „in

'Credits.
"Many people complete their
Cax returns in the evening and
on weekends," the minister
noted,` -`-:and •if..the y run, into a
problem with the tax credit
portion of the return, we want
them to call us. It's much better
for people to take a minute or
two to phone and get the right
information than make a
mistake, which could delay not
only the processing of their
return, but also the payment of•
any Ontario Tax Credits or
' income tax refunds that might
be due."
The Ontario Tax Credit
System is designed to 'con-"'
tribute greater fairness to
provincial , and municipal
taxation, through,the payment
of credits which are related to
the individual's_ ability to pay
taxes ..This - ; it is expected
that approxi'rely $375 million
in property, sales and pen-
sioner tax credit claims will be
made by Ontario residents,
The Tax Credit Information
Centre can only provide
`assistance with Ontario Tax
Credit claims., Questions on
other aspects of the income tax
return should be directed to the
