The Concerned Farmers for–
the United_ Townships hope they
have come one step' closer in
their battle to save Ontario's
last • large tract of prime
agricultural land.
During previous ex-
propriation hearings for the
Bruce to Seaforth transmission
corridor, Ontario Hydro sited
environmentalists as one of the .
reasons %or refusing the shorter
route preferred by the farmers.
A section of this route con-
tained a few spotted turtles the
environmentalists wanted to
save,Avas the reason given by
Ontario Hydro. .,
Environmentalist Craig
Campbell has been studying the
survival of the endangered
spotted turtle for over five
years and has stated that to his
knowledge there are no viable
units of spotted ,turtles in the
area outlined by Ontario
Hydro. This view has been
supported by The Federation of
Naturalists, Nature C
servancy of Canada aAI
Conservation ," Council of
Ontario.
"We 'do' not know of, ' any
environmental groups sup-
porting the destructive
,southern route over the shorter'
northern one," said Lloyd
Moore, farmers' spokesman. '
Mr. Moore was recently a
guest speaker at the Labour -
Environmental Conference at
Trent University, Peter-
borough. •
"We can't help wohdering
how many other inaccuracies
exist in Ontario Hydro's
statements,," he added.
The Concerned Farmers of
the United Townships of
Turnberry, Howick, Wallace,
Maryborough, Peel, Woolwich
and Pilkington, have for over a
year been supporting 'an
alternate northern route rather
than the southern route of
