PAGE 13B—GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, THURSDAY, MARCH 6, 1975
A look back
brings fun week
BY JEFF SEDDON
The only way a student can
entirely appreciate an era of
history being studied is to ,
relive the era. That is exactly
what the Grade 3 students at
Victoria 4Public school did to
appreciate the earlY 1900's• in
Canada.
The class, taught by Miss
Diane Verhoef, came to school
on Friday with long dresses,
knickers, caps, bonnets and
slates to learn 1975 schoolwork
in 1900 style.
The idea for the day long
project came as a result of a
reading exercise. The children
study that period of -ganadian
history in their social studies
class and the idea to dress and
learn in the old style would
serve a dual purpose; English
and,history,
Three weeks before the class
the children started bringing
old things from home and
collecting antiques from their
own houses or their relatives.
One student brought a wedding
outfit that their great grand-
mother wore when she ,was
married, The children
decorated the class room and
used cardboard to constz uct a
pot bellied stove that was used
to heat the classrooms of their
grandmothers and grand-
fathers.
To add to the atmosphere of.
the class the children made
horn books to use in school.
Horn books were used prior to
the invention of individual
slates. They were ,a flat board
with a handle and were used to
hold paper.
In the morning the class had
their regular current events
period but instead of timely
news they made up some news
from 1900. One of the students
reported an accident that
resulted from a- driver ex-
ceeding the ten miles per. hour
speed limit.
Diane Verhoef was m• ore than
satisfied by the results of the
experiment. She said she was
surprised by the number of
students who dressed up for the
day and the enthusiasm they
had for the project.
"They really enjoyed using
slates and doing their, Current
- events," said Miss Verhoef.
"The other subjects were
very easy to teach as well," she
*added.
The school librarian Mrs.
Dennis Steep helped put with
the project. She showed the
children a slide show on the
history of lights an gave the
children an idea of how people
lived in the past. Mrs. Steep is
also an antique dealer and
brought things to school from
that era and explained what
they were and how they \.'ere
used.
One of the students had to
,miss the special da Y because of
an unexpected stay in the
hospital. ,The children decided
to share their experiences with
her by putting a booklet of the
day's activities together with
some pictures Miss Verhoef
took to give the absentee an
idea of what went on during

to be relived, The next' project
is cowboy day which • will be
after the March break.
One student shduld be
