Sunday minor
hockey activity
hotly debated
The Goderich recreation
board' rejected a proposal
Thursday night from the
Goderich Ministerial
Association to discontinue
minor hockey on Sunday
mornings.
The A'ssociation,asked the rec
board to close the arena until
one o'clock Sunday afternoon
saying that hockey was in-
terfering with church services
and Sunday School,
MinOr hockey schedules an
hour of ice time on Sunday to
give a bantam level team equal
time with their counterparts
playing throughout the week.
Jim Peters explained to the
boardtthat the extra team was
unexpected when the ice time
was scheduled and that Sunday
morning was the only time
available for use. He said that.
when the teams were drawn up
there were 16 players in the 13
and 14 year old division left
over . and - a new team was
created.
Manfred Dierolf told the
board he resented someone
telling him what to do andlhat
he felt that this letter was
telling him what to do. He said
that he felt that as a parent he
was capable of looking after his
own children and did not need
someone to tell him to take
them to church or to hockey.
Lyn Meyers saidthat if the
board' could not . run an
organization and stay away'
to thp question if you asked it
Monday morning.
" Emily Crew said she Was as
concerned about youngsters,
playing hockey Sunday mor-
ning as she was about sending
the teams ,off to play in
Hanover or Walkerton on,
Saturday night 'and not getting
them home until very late. he
said she felt neither situation
was worthy.
In other business 4he
recreation director Mike
Dymond related tne results of
the meeting between, council,
the rec board and the Huron
County Health Unit.
• He said that the discussion
amongst the representatives
centered around what
minimum 'work could be done
this year to get the pool in
shape for , opening and if the
entire plan need to be coni -

decision made at the im-
promptu meeting was that the
recreation board make a
presentation to codncil con-
cerning the need to preserve
the pool and the time period to
be taken for any work done to
it.
The rec director told. the
board; •that a quegionnaire
from the provincial govern-
ment concerning the 'al'end arid
its structure has raised a
question concerning the safety
of the building. The result of the
quation was that :a study

adding' that the ice time orre
Sunday should be able to be B
rescheduled to another day.
John Doherty told the board
of one case he had encountered •
with Sunday morning practice. (continued from page 1)
He said he told his players if
they were not at ,practice , CanadianTrotting Association
rules and -that the move could

from one group the board would
not be . within their Tights. He
said the move would be
discrimination against minor
hockey.
Jim Peters said that the
situation was one in which
"you're damned if you do and
You're ' damned if you don't.'
He said, he was all in favor of
rescheduling the ice time if
another hour could' be found
adding that he doubted. if it
could be found.
Pete McCauley said that he
felt there was no reason to close -
the arena altogether claming
that adults are certainly
capable of making up their own
minds.
Manfred Dierolf challenged
the _statement saying it ,was,
suggesting that these same
adults were not old enough to
make up their own minds about
what they' , wanted for their
children.
John Doherty saidthat if you
asked the players what they
would refer to do Sunday
Morning they would probably
all rather play hockey. Lyn
Meyers added that you would
. probably get the smile reponse
by racing, in September we
stand a good chance 04 losing
money,'" he said.
• Councillor Elsa Haydon said
that as ' parks chairman she
• took offence at the remark that
by giving the usel'of the park tc
the softball tournament the
town would be taking away
from a business. She said.that
the, town was not concerned
about business at the park but
only about the public use of it.
"I don't care who Makes
'money," she said. _ "But at
times I get the impression that
the racing association think.
they own the park and they are
doing someone a favor by
letting them use it."
The councillor added that she
questioned the improvements
-the association made at the
grandstand. She felt that the
improvements made were for
their own benefit and to give
committee of council was in-'
strUcted to discuss the lease for
the association, not the Friday
night.use of the park.
"Last year the Friday night
racing was new 'and no one
' could be blamed for the
problem but this year no effort
was made to discuss the subject
between the two groups and the,
pressure was put on council to
solve the problem," Mrs.
Haydon stated.
'She said she personally was
satisfied viiith, the decision of
council but • would support the
majority adding that • the
association should appoint one
spokesman to avoid disputing
quotes. •
Mr. MacKay admitted that,
the two 'groups had not met on
the matter to date.
