It is the hope of the Goderich branch of conservationists as well as those across Canada that the third, Monday in February will soon ,be a familiar national holiday to all Canadians and that on this date Canadians will all be enjoying and reflecting on the great architectural, natural, cultural, and , historical' heritage of our nation. - Since 1967 there has been a PART FIVE COLOUR IN DIAMONDS, Diamonds- have been found . and cut in some ,tones and intensities of each of the six spectral hues; ,however, they are usually either colourless or range from very light to strongly coloured yellow or brown. Both the relative rarity of the colourless stones and the fact that they are considered more attractive by the majority of, people has made them the most valuable of the usual range of diamond Colours.. Despite the .common usage of terms suer as "blue -white", and "gem blue", blue diamonds are exceedingly , rare; Most diamonds ,tfrlatare -rere'rreirto by-theseterms—aiT-' actually very faintly tinted with yellow, although some are colouriesS. As,. yellow and brown in diamonds increases from the colourless endof the ustfal. gi•aciing scale, the valtie drops to the point at which the colour becomes deep enough to be an asset. Attractive deep tones,of these ,colours increase desirability and value. Very faint tints of other colours, with the 'exception of blue, violet and pink, tend to have the 'same effect. Light tints of these latter colours are complemented' by white, or yellow gold mountings,. in addition to being rated highin, colour preference, whereas light tints of yellow,, orange, -brown and gray do not meet these requirements as 'well. Nearly all coloured diamonds tend to become less attractive in dark tones, since the colour almost eliminates the white brilliancy expected of diamond. The term Fancy is applied to any diamond that possesses a distill:et' body colour other than light yellow, light brown or gray, because these are most common and constitute commercial grades of , diamonds. Distinctly . yellow diamond are fancies called CAN The famous , rtine Diamond weigh' g . 137.5 is.. ...c16.„„ .1b0 a,P ''cOlour. Brown diamond re fairly common; recldis - rown and coffee - browns are particularly at - I -if -active. Rose ' and Pink diamonds are VERY RARE. The most famous pink diamond' is the Conde Diamond, which is pear shaped and in the treasure at Chantilly, near Paris. Fine blue diamonds are extremely., rare, Sapphire blue"' is the description of the 44.5 carat Hope • Diamond. •tiow in the Sniithsonian Institute. Fine -greens are also , extremely rare. The 48.5 carat Dresden Green Diamond is a lovely yellowish -green. Light and olive greens are duplicated in cyclotron treated stones, as well as yellows.. Deeper yellows are called, CHAM- PAGNES, Mauve and violets are 'quite • rare whereas oranges are more common. Most fancy -coloured diamonds, Although very attractive and desirable, are seldom more, or as expensive per carat than stones without. body colour. •The largest group of diamond colours and most important is from colourless to light yellow. grading a cut diamond for 'colour means deciding the amount by which it deviates from' Colourless. More often it is. grading degrees of transparency. In order to do this the stormgiust be examined In completely white light, with little reflection, anti neutral surrAndings, with „the aid of omparison stones of known colour grades. This is an extremely Lm- 'portqnt part of diamond grading and requires thorough training in order to pick .out the extremely fine gradations of colourless, transparencies , and light yellows. Man cannot remember these fine dif- ferences ifl0 colour, with his eyes, and each little Variation affects a dianiond's value. Part Six...I•lextVgek David C..,AnstettG.G. Graduate dertatogist (G.I.A.) „ , Clinton growing awareness of.the need to itsreserve the unique natures of our towns, villages, marsh and woodlands, :and all manners of parks in which the Canadian public can go to refresh themselves in the quiet of natural surroundings. At the same time there has been a growing need to preserve the rich architectural heritage with which we have been endowed. The stress of modern Irving is heightened and our sense of continuity- and community is threatened every time local landmarks are replaced by asphalt or concrete. It is because of this that con- servation groups have sprung up all over the country to protect and salvage our national heritage to the best of their ability. But as these groups have all worked in- dependently with little or no funding or expertise, many, many heritage buildings and much needed beautiful scenic landscapes have been lost. The Federal., Government recognized the problem and in 1973 Heritage Canada was formed to unify the work,of conservationists across he country and to provide the national assistance needed in these pressing times. The Huron County Branch of the Architectural Conservancy is a member organization of Heritage Canada and will be - represented on the , Regional .Council which is being set up apd will meet for the first tin*" It is interesting to mite that in .this year, the 125th birthday of doderich there are 189 buildings in Goderich alone. which are over 100 years old and which have been catalogued, With every necessary detail noted, by the 'Federal Government, The county town is rich in its ar- chitectural heritage as well as in its natural scenic beauty. On Heritage Day it is fitting for Canadians to salute the many area citizens who have! contributed in some way to the aims of the A.C.O.pand Heritage Canada. In this group we must include: the Town of Goderich and 'the 'Business Mens' Association for the restoration work being done on the square, the many volunteernd contributors to the Huron Historic Jail project; the pari of St. George's church- fo the interior restoration wop Which they undertook ; therlownsfolk Goderich residents would be amiss if they did not extend ,a hearty congratulation to the most progressive thinking communities is Huron County with regards to.the recognition of the importance of heritage preservation. nese are the citizens of the township of Grey and the villages of Brussels and Zurich. The councils of these communities after much public discussion and input have adopted official plans in which certain buildings ' are recognized to be of historic value. Not only are they protecte&from demolition but also no significant external alteration is allowed to these buildings without permission of council. Their lists include many fine residents, as well as public buildings and churches. These communities have set an example for us all. This year; the 125th an- niversary of Goderich residents of Goderich are invited to become actively involved in the work of heritage preservation for their community.
