petition or official attitudes -

What is International from enjoying to the full, the
Women's Year? IWY. During rights legally granted. And so
1970-71 organizations of the reason for the Special
women (non-governmental) year for 'women is to focus
in ,several countries, began attention throughout the
suggesting that the United world on the 'situation and
Nations should designate a
year for women, just as the
U:N. had set aside years for
human rights, population
International cooperation,
etc.
The formal iniative for IWY
was taken by the UN Com-
, mission ' on the Status of
Women when it met in'
Geneva in 1972.
A resolution was introduced
asking that 1975 'be
designated by the UN as a
year to focus attention
throughout the world on the
. status of women, After ap-
proval , by the Commission,
the resolution made its way
thru' the UN system; going
first to the UN Economic and
_Social Council for approval
and finally to the UN General
Assembly ° which gave its
approval'in December 1972.
Priorities given to issues
affecting women differed
among the , countries
represented on the com-
means of improvement. And
so, the Commission at its
meeting in New York in
January 1974; suggested
these objections, briefly, as
EQUALITY, DEVELOP-
MENT, PEACE.
New ' programs and ideas
should come about which will
be carried on well beyond'
1975. These programs also
should . involve the men as
well as women and this will
also help the family, the local
community, the nation and
the world.
We should begin now, if not
already started, to plan a
program of -Research, review,
recognition and action.
Search out what women - past
and present - have con-
tributed to the development
of your town, county and
province. Look around. Are
women high school, principals
or elementary school heads?
Are they presidents or vice-
presidents of banks- or are

In.order to spread the word
inform yourself of the
current status of women in
Canada. The local library can
provide you with the basic
reading material. The Report
of the Royal Commission on
the Status of Women is the.
fundamental book for the full
documentation of the
Canadian Women's situation.
The library should also
have all federal gov't
publications on hand - ask to
see these and other materials
and books' which deal with
women. Tell everyone at
home, at work or if you have
children in school, talk to
their teachers ; counsellors,
the principal and other
parents. Start talking, start
planning, then DO it. WHY
NOT!
At this point why not check.
