predict -defucits .next -.year
The Goderich Recreation
Board , learned at its
inaugural meeting Thursday
night that the Young Canada
Week hockey tournament is
in financial difficulty and
mayneed municipal support
in 1976.
The board . -met a
delegation from the Lions
Club to discuss possible town
support for the annual
tournament. Pete MacEwan
'and Dick Wright, both
members of -,the service club,
'told the board that this Year
the Lions could handle the
tournament costs but next
year • may be a different
••,•:'~>' story; They said they wanted
the board .to:know about the
situation well in advance of
any grant requests. •
'Food costs are the major
concern the club has in the
'operation of the annual Pee-
Wee tourhey, The club in-
vestigated several
possibilities for giving the
players one. hot meal ,a day
and • found- it could not be
done• cheaper than $2.50 per
player per day. The most the
club could afford per_meal
75 cents and.. this will° ,be
given in, the . form of a
voucher tobe used at the
arena.
• The • structure ofthe
tournament has changed this
year to offer the teams a
set: rrd,-ch'al ce. after -a loss
Originally teams were
elirninated from play after
their firstloss. This year the
losing teams will be assured
a second garne in a con- ^
solation series,
Numerous complains the
Ontario Minor Hockey
'Association ' received con-
cerning the single knockout
system prompted the
change. To, accommodate
the extra games the total
team participation had to be
reducedAfroin 88 clubs to'62.
The,Lions expect the`
'reductin in the number of'
teams to'. affect gate
receipts. To compensate,
they raised 'other prices.
Entry fees were increased to
$40 from $25. Booster tickets
sold to hockey' supporters
will be more expensive this
year. Prices rose to 'five
dollars, three dollars and
one dollar ` for booster
tickets. Last year they sold
for three, two_and one dollar
each.
.The Lions presented the
rec board with , a detailed, Tickets for the tournament
financial statement are avaliable from members
itemizing each expense and
food was more than three
'times ,.more than any other.
-item.. Last year. food .:-for
players' and referees' meals
amounted, to nearly $4,000
.and the referee's party cost
an extra $600. Expecting a 15
percent...jntrease- in costs this
'year the Lions t.lidgeted over
$5,000 td defray the same
costs.
Costs of souvenir sticks,
crests and trophies as vyell
as ' some administration
expenses are expected to
increase 15 percent this year
over last.,
The Lions estimate they
will net two hundred dollars
on, • the week's activities.
Their statement shows a net
profit last year of 45 dollars.
The delegation also asked
the tee- board to keep the
gate receipt split at the
saime percentage as last
year. 'Sixty percent of the
revenues go to the Lions, the
rest, to the town.
