Start feeding dairy cattIe economically More and more Ontario :'dairy farmers are wondering how to combat rising feed costs and still keep milk production high. "Feed cows according to milk' produ'ctlon levels", suggests Dr. G.K. MacLeod, professor in the Animal 'and Poultry Science Department at the Ontario Agricultural College. "While underfeeding energy and protein causes the milk production of high producers to drop, ' the over- condition of heifers and of cows producing, less milk indicates their. milk production would not drop if they were given less high energy feed." If possible, feed each cow grain according to its produc- tion record and accepted guidelines, such as those in the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food fact.sheets, "Feeding for More Economical Milk Production" (Order No. 74- 066) and "Guidelines for Feeding Dairy Cattle" (Order No. 74-020), available from county and district agricultural offices. Christmas. tree is life's story BY WILLIAM BURTON CO NESTOG A JOURNALISM STUDENT The Christmas tree could be -,thought of as the tree of life because of this legend of its origination. When Adam was dying from the forbidden fruit he sent Seth to the garden of Eden to beg for Oil of Mercy. Seth found this to be an impossibie task. The guardian cherub gave him a seed from . the Tree of Life which Seth was comman- ded to plant pn his father's grave. After he had done soba tree grew in that place. This was the tree from which Moses obtained his wonder working rod. The tree was later cut down and cast away. The cross was made from this tree that our Lord was crucified upon. - So it did, become the Tree of Life, "Remember though, when a pound of grain costs as much as, or more than, a pound 'of milk nets, you should consider restricting grain to all,' except for the high producers", says Dr. MacLeod; If labor and housing requirements make in- dividual feeding impossible, feed cattle in groups; moving them to lower grain groups as their production drops. Since goody quality forages are usually the cheapest source of ' nutrier'ts, feed them free choice. The best quality forage should go only to cows in peak production. To balance forages and grains, have them tested at the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food feed testing laboratory at the University of Guelph. Further information about feed testing is available from county and district agricultural- offices. 0 B.ruce cmmunities stndto lose revenue 1 The municipalities surroun ding",the Bruce Nuclear Power Development will lose over $400,00u a year in tax revenues once the power development is completed unless some form of regional government is in- stituted in the area. Sam Horton, project manager at the Bruce NPD, stated" at a press conference in Kincardine Thursday after- noon that grants under the Power Corporations Adt would be approximately $500,,000 a year if both the nuclear, plants and the additional heavy water plants for the site go as plan- ned. ,However, the present municipal structure will prevent the distribution of the maximum pliant in ,the area. The fact is, it may be time to replace your present gas water heater with a new Gulfstream, But chances are, you'll wait until your present one develops a leak, and then do something about it. But long before then, it may be cost- ing you time and convenience, because your present one may simply not be delivering hot water when you need it. Most often, this is caused by the dish- , washer, clothes washer, and additional family you didn't have when your was installed. ; .,4 . So today, when you need" hot water more often, your old system can't keep up. Remember. A larger storage tank doesn't necessarily supply a;larger volume of hot water. Gulfstream natural gas water beaters work on the principle of fast reheatingof water, rather than storage. So you may draw off hot water when required, hour after hour, instead of waiting for large volumes of water to heat up. What we're saying is simple. When it comes to replacing your present system, remember Gulfstream. You can lease one, or buy one, depending on your choice. You'll find it's an economical and efficient way to have hot water on hand whenyouneed it. But then, if,you've owned a Gulfstream water heater before, that won't come as a shock 'to you. c,nIoncfls LIMITED .t„
