The results of the latest 12 -
month testing • program to
evaluate compliance with
Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety
Standards, released today by
Transport Minister Jean Mar-
chand, show the motor vehicle
industry is in compliance with
safety standards.
- During the period April 1973
through March 1974 the
Ministry's Road and Motor
Vehicle Traffic, Safety Branch
conducted 724 vehicle and
component tests, including 50.
passenger cars, 27 snowmobiles
and more than two thousand
vehicle components.
Fo'r the purpose of the
testing, new. vehicles are 'pur-
chased from dealers and
represent typical products
available to Canadian pur-
chasers.
All 'passenger cars tested
complied with) emission safety
standards but initial marginal
results on 20 cars indicate that
improvements were required in
manufacturer's engine tuning
procedures and dealer servicing
instructions.
The current emission testing
program which commenced in
April 1974 has ,demonstrated
significant improvements in
Christmas
in Guyana
'BY INDRANI SINGH

JOURNALISM STUDENT
Five years ago everybody
started' buying their Christmas
gifts, etc. from mid November.
Starting early December
-blinking Christmas lights went
on -and decorated synthetic pine
trees were sef up in various
houses owned by people of
Christian, Moslem, Hindu and
other religions.
Everybody celebrated Christ-
mas, it was a time to make
more money, have ,a few days
off to drink, eat lavish food,
'munch on B.C. apples (they're
banned now) and grapes. It was
a , time to eat . walnuts and
almond nuts and party as much
as you wanted and not feel
guilty about the extravagance
of it. all, even though for the
first few weeks after Christmas
one had to tighten their belt to
make up forthat previous ex-
tragagance.
Stores were open later than
usual and finally on Christmas
Eve night they looked like
human jungles. Prices were
•supposedly lower with the
original and cut prices in red
and white or black and white.
Teenagers congregated out-
side of the biggest and most ex-
pensive store, talking, laughing,
smoking_ and' occasionally
strolling over to the hotel
obliquely away,. for a few
drinks.
After the stores were closed
young and old began
celebrating Enmities were
•forgotten, people were happy
'greeting each other with
'Merry Christmas".
Christmas Day was spent at
home, families got together for
the day to drink and eat a
variety of foods ranging from
baked turkey to chicken curry.
Streets were practically empty
except for those who holiday or
no holiday plod on to different
destinations, or ply the streets'
for their daily bread.
- People visited their friends
on Boxing Day to have a few
drinks and then be on their way
to other friends. ome made
their way downtown window
shopping "and 'to admire • the
decorated streets with lighted
trees. Not to be forgotten were
the muggers who seemed to be
everywhere and knew that
people walked around with
more money than usual.
Suddenly Christmas .was
over and it was tirne for the
breadwinners .to return to their
various jobs but also
preparations were, started for
New Year's eve.
Dressmakerswere swamped
with orders and material for
stylish gowns, hairstylists were
booked heavily.
On New Year's eve couples,
dressed in their fineries made
their way M' dance halls, club,
hotels and homes to celebrate
and drink their way to mid-
night when everybody went
wild kissing each other and
shouting "-Happy New- Year".
Parties gained momentum and
continued until daybreak and
some way past that.
New Year's day was spent
quietly with a little drinking,
here and there. Celebrations
were over. It was a new year
but the next day tif4 continued
as usual.
Today, cost of living has
risenover 200 percent, unem-
ploynient is high and not many
people celebrate the Christmas
.holidays like yesteryear.
engine tuning.
Also, variations , in tests
results indicate in many cases
the need for manufacturers to
improve vehicle design objec-
tive. and manufacturing

continuing compliance of
production vehicles with.

Although all origins equip-

replacement tires did not meet
the federal new tire standards

Results also indicate that

Other areas of concern are
