.Mixed plants
make unusual
holiday gifts
If you give plants for Christ-
mas, surprise your friends by
presenting something different,
such as a mixed pan, suggests
Ont.ario'Ministry of Agriculture
and Food horticulturist, D.M.
Sangster.
Consider arrangements par-
ticularly appropriate for Christ-
mas - a ' single red° poinsettia,
surrounded by a ring of white'
- chrysanthemums, for example. ,
Also effective would be a mixed
pan that includes several kinds
of foliage plants, or an or-
namental pepper plant,
asparagus fern, a Geranium, a
Begonia, and some coleus or
dpsty miller.

Residents vow to keep
access to rivers open
Concern was expressed In
Holmesville last week that cot-
tage development and private
ownership of land along the
Bayfield and Maitland rivers
not be allowed to follow the
strip development of 'cottages
along Lake Huron.
At the third of four public
workshops designed to produce
an official plan for Goderich
Township, the majority of the
60 township residents atten-
ding vowed to maintain public
access to the two rivers which
border the township on the
north and south. -
The workshop followed two
others one on agricultural
land use, the other on urban
land uses — to plan the orderly
development of the township:
Huron County planner- Gary
Davidson said most cottage
development. in the township
between Bayfield and Goderich
limits public access to Lake
Huron beaches: •
-
Resident opinion he, said,
would help the county decide if
similar 'developments are to be
allowed albng the B"ayfieldrand
Maitland rivers.
Several property owners
along . both rivers and Lake
Huron said the public has a
right to share the enjoyment of
the natural environment.
One woman suggested it is
the role of. government, to
inevitably acquire land for
public enjoyment.
A farmer who owns land
along the Bayfield River said
he has no objections ton persons
enjoying his property, "as long
as no .damage is clone."
• Another person suggested
that footpaths like the Bruce
Trail be developed to give the
public access to beauty spots in
the township.
Mr. Davidson said cottage
'development has been so in-
tense along Lake Huronthat
everal lots are of substandard
#4i .e and owners „might not be
able to acquire building per-
mits for undeveloped. lots.
Christmas cards a tradition
BY PAUL MARCK
'CONESTOGA JOURNALISM
STUDENT
So who will you be sending
`Christmas cards out to this
year? Without too much
thought to it, you'll probably
just look at last year's,list, and
delete the name of those who
didn't mail, you one. Then just
fire -them off to everybody else
who is still on the list.
Simple, isn't it? How did this
tradition of .card sending in the
Yule season get its start
anyway? a
s es were sent" - 8601s "w"hem-severat-Ellglislr
at New Year's by the Chinese )§tationery dealers began to
hundreds of year ago and by•. promote the idea of sending
greetings at Christmas time.
From there, the idea spread
to the United States, and
became global in popularity.
The first one was designed in
Ehgland by T.C. Horsley for
Henry Cole, a Victorian public
figure who ran an art shop" in
London. Horsley's card, inten-
ded for sale there, was
arranged in three sections, like
a .rnedieval religious painting.
There was a family group' .in
the center, eating and drinking
to celebrate the day, with the
side panels showing Christians
doing good works, like clothing
and feeding the poor.
Christmas cards really
gained popularity ' in the mid
the Gefmans during the Middle
, Ages, Christmas cards weren't
used , anywhere till the
nineteenth century.
