At Christmas perhaps more than any other time of the year,
memories of days and times past surface and become of ut-
most importance to many, many people. -
During 1974, The Goderich Signal -Star has been running old
pictures ofpeople, places and things in and around Goderich.
It has been a popular feature, especially with' Signal -Star
readers who are, senior citizens:.

The Signal -Star has published some school pictures from the
past, most'of the persons in them now identified. Anyone who .
has been following this feature will know by now Dr. Strang,
the bearded .gentleman pictured on the extreme left of the

tures, gathered'here and there and provided to the Signal -Star
through the courtesy of interested readers. Some are iden-
tified, some are not. All are a testimony to Goderich's rich
heritage and are published .in an effort to keep this history
alive.
May these did photos in some measure bring a touch of faith"
to Christmas 1974 and create a renewed feeling of .Peace on
Earth, Goodwill to All Men.

Newcomers to Goderich will not remember the old Sunset' Hotel on Britanrt.a Road West at
Essex -Street, but it was one of the most famous spots in all of Goderich at one time. The
building was torn down several years ago to-makeway for the new homes which are going up
in that district, but not before :it served as one of the,most posh vacation hotes on Lake Huron
for years and years. At a giant auction sale before its demise, many Goderich and area per-
sons purchased treasured souV'enirs for their own homes as a reminder of the popular land-
mk. This 'photograph was supplied to The Signal -Star by Mrs. J.L. 'Sieber of 98 Britannia
Road .West and is another of R.R. Sallow's efforts. .

Years ago, before snowplows and sanding equipment, sleighs were a common winter con-
veyance and sleigh bells were a common winter sound. Charlie MacLeod of Sault Ste. Marie
has provided the Signal -Star with this photograph which brings back this memory. The man ,
on the sleigh' is his father and the picture was taken in Goderich by R.R. Sallows, a well-
known photographer in this area.
In the year 1000 Benmiller had its own orchestra and its eight second row', left to right, Harry Mew, Walter Straughan,
Inembars undoubtedly spent many hours during the Christmas George Stewart, Arthur Fisher and Tom Johns: front row, left
season delighting audiences with their parlor music. The to right, Dick Heddle and Harry Gledhill,
members of that group are standing, (top) George James;
This photo came to light when a family was clearing out a .. Mr Dunh4111, whose name figured in the supposedly hufnorous
Bayfield house The customer in the stiff hat is not Identified, saying: "Mabee Wilson Dunham Goode" - a dentist and three
(they had Chairs for patrons!) but druggist presumably is druggists around The Square 70 years ago, This' information
