The Goderich Signal-Star, 1974-12-12, Page 5GODERICHSIONAL•STAR, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 12, 1974, --PAGE 5 ROUND AND ABOUT wirN MARTHA 11111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111 The wintetstorms are upon us -and I just dread the thought of scraping and digging. Already I have had the car washer and wipers quit. The Service Station man got the wipers going after digging the ice out of the channel but on finding ice in the washer container, he - dumped the whole thing on the ground and sold me a gallon of his stuff. When I really needed the washer to help clear the ice .:.from the windshield the •darned thing still didn't work. Very frustrating I' was reading an item for snowmobilers in which safety practices • were stressed. Already this year• folks with the snowmobiles have had a chance to do their good deeds. The big storm ,in Essex County a week ago brought out these fellows to rescue hun- dreds stranded aA ..,loe _, ,,., „• ., ss ways - some o t em near frozen after running out of gas and having to just sit. , My son and his wife- from --Windsor visited us that weekend and so were caught in the storm' on their return hothe. Six hours to go the last ten miles - and a dreadful night. They left their , brother, Doug, and'I, at 6 p.m. stopped in Lon- don and after getting no infor- mation on conditions ahead, they left London at 8 p.m. They arrived home at 6 a.m. exhausted: . This is the sort of storm WE have most years and we aren't too surprised when 'it, hits, but, for Essex County to get it - THAT'S tough. The only thing we can hope for, now, is that the snow snow is out- of the system and the rest of the winter will- be--ah--tolerable. I can't help thinking back to ▪ our first winter here. In the first week of March '47 the worst snowstorm for many years - someone said "80 some - raged for three or four days and left Goderich and other communities in this district isolated - STRANDED. The storm began on Sunday, and on Thursday, March 6, a plow with four engines behind it left Stratford for Goderich, hoping to clear the C.N. line for many people who had been stranded for three or four days and werehoping to get home on the train. Roads - were still im- „ „ passable. About 40 farmers along the 8th Concession, Colborne were out early Wednesday morning and by evening had shovelled the road clear from Auburn to Goderich.. No mail, no police y Men from the lumber yard, Ed- wards Coal, Sky Harbour and others laboured with shovels - assisted by a snovi' plow and truck, opened the road to get the ambulance thru'. This took half a day --then the road filled right in again. Also, at that time, another well known citizen Beth Tobin was frantic to get OUT of town. She was to leave Saturday from New York for a trip to Britain. On Thursday, Lou Lane -a pilot at Sky Harbor, took her by plane to catch a train at Hamilton and on to her ship. Local bakers worked in four shifts to meet the bread shor- tage. Mercy flights were made by the late Keith Hopkinson dropping food and medicine to isolated villages and homes. People talked about "floppy', and his "Skyways Milk Ex- press", for many years.' Froin above he could see the cars and trains marooned all over the district. I had lived in Essex County a"' cou"rt, hockey, ----buses or • any schedules were able to carry oh. AND no papers for a week. Mrs. Ted Baechler visiting 4 , 1/2 miles north of town with her brother, had taken ill there, PERIDOT The term peridot comes directly from the French •• "peridot", which in old French was "peritot", the origin of the .word is uncertain, however.' In com- mon with many other gemstones, peridot has an interesting background of legend and super- stition. It was called "the gem of - .the Sun" by the ancients. Their belief that it had the power to dissolve enchantments and to put evil spirits to flight was probably due to this association with the sun, before whole 'life- giving rays darkness and all powers of darkness were driven away. For peridot to exert its full powers as a talisman, it had to be set in gold; warn in this way, it was thought, to dispell the terrors of the night. Top .quality grades of Peridot are medium to dark, slightly yellowish green, which to many gives the impression. of a warm, velvety colour. It is never as in- tense in colour as the most ex- pensive grades of emerald µ or demantoid garnet, but to those who appreciate peridot, this is an important facet of its beauty. There is little doubt that over the years the most important source of gem peridot has been the island in the Red Sea, Zeber- jed. The secondmajor source of peridot is the Mogok area of Up- per Burma. Excellent light green stones are found occasionally on an Indian Reservation in Arizona. Other sources of gem quality peridot in small quan- ° ti,ties are Brazil, Australia and Czechoslovakia. - Gem quality peridot has a unique beauty of its own; a soft velvety texture imparting a "sleepy" appearance of warmth, make' an inviting combination, increasingly cherished by its wearer. Peridot is the birthstone for the month "df August,• - David Anstett Graduate $emologist (GIA) Clinton, Ont. talk, to her friends • and EVE Y_ ONE who would listen - tell them to write to their M.P.P. that .,they were not in favor of this bill. If you don't write they don't know how you feel about ,not being able to have your awn doctor• when you need him or being shipped miles away „frons home when you are ill. Getting the • whole organization to sign a letter should be done by each group in town or ,by area, - ANYTHING to convey the word that socialized medicine is 'not for us. s Reams have been written against this bill soon to be' brought up and unless the,,,, representatives of your areas have hundreds of letters to show we don't want this amalgamation of hospitals and services --they can't do a thing against it. Once it is passed it is too late. Mrs. Taylor has Mr. Davis' letter ready to show you if you wish. - coming to Goderich-and snow was an exciting experience there, since it turned to slush so quickly. I had some qualms about winter here; but I was assured it was always easy to get around -not too much snow. If they'd 'piled up all the snow I had ever seen in thirty years, it couldn't compare with the snow we had in that storm. Three miles out of town - Laithwaites - . the snow was drifted to the cross bars on the telephone lines and on leaving Clinton for Winghatn about two or three weeks after the storm - we travelled 'thro' snowtunnels, the like of which I had never ever heard about. What a country! What a lot of Liars! I was really disgusted. Since then, I've travelled thru' many bad storms' but, I'll - never forget that first one. I am happy to find some people ° really are concerned -about the "Mustard - Report',' which will come before Parliament early in the new year. Once this bill is passed - TH►T IS I'h! Mrs. Stewart Taylor from the Nile called me saying she had. written some time ago to Premier Davis. She received a letter from him saying he was pleased to hear of her concern about this hill and urged her to Mrs. Taylor and asked what Mr. Taylor 'was `up to' these ' days. She assured me he was..' keeping real busy with his car- vings and other . crafts. '.The first time I met Stewart Taylor I was fascinated by his little blacksmith, shop. For most people- it would be a dusty, old, junky shop - to me it showed the possibilities of many - wonderful things hap- pening there. And they DID. Mr. Taylor is. indeed very clever, has many wonderful talents - and is using them. I hope someday he will have a showing of the things he has made - that is if he can get people to return some of these gifts for his show! Every - year people travel many miles to the Christmas Concert at St. Joseph School in Kingsbridge. Just a reminder that it is on December 19 this year. Don't miss I see another Barbie and Ken Doll clothes ad. The kids love these dolls and they DO last for years - so dress them up and make someone happy with there. Phone 526-7256.
