The year .1963 marked the. beginning of the
Kinsmen —C/F relationship when Dr Douglas
Crozier of the Hospital tor Sick Children in
Toronto spoke to the Kinsmen of the North York
Club jtnd explained this dr 'aed. childhood disease.
In 1966 1961 alr{urrrll was given lot the

the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

Cystic Fibrosis
Cystic Fibrosis'(or C/F) is one of 'the most com•
mon serious chronic disorders of Canadian infants c
and children,
• O(I SIN EV,,.ERY 1,000 CHILDREN is born
with Cystic Fibrosis.. •
• 'C/F claims more victims'than Polio ever did at.
its prevaccine worst.
• '
C/F. hits children in the LUNGS and in the
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM. In the lungs, thick gluey,
mucus clings to the inner walls reducing the oxy-
gen supply. In the stomach, faulty digestive juices
cannot extract the nutrition from the food
consumed.
• Ten years ago, most •C/F children died before
teaching school age, Today, with early diagnosis
and expert treatmen"t, many affected' youngsters
stand a good chance of living beyond their teens.
• Treatment includes: diet supplements; mist
tents; "postural drainage" therapy; breathing
exercises; and, specific medications to combat
infection.

.• For most families, C/F is a STAGGERING
ECONOMIC DRAIN. The outlay for drug's and •
equipment may run to $2,000 a year:
• The Canadian C/F Foundation' has established
18 C/F Centres and Clinics across Canada for treat-
ment, research and teaching.
