This unusual setting for a high school competitive event was, a gasoline station in San Diego, California anti the event itself was the first Champion Spark Plug Company Economy Rally. The assembled students and teachers were con- cerned with every drop of gas used. The Rally, inaugurated by Champion, Sought to. show that gas economy, safe driving and good fun can be achieved 'by evert the most inexperienced drivers. All competitors from 10 high schools in San Diego were recent driver -train- ing graduates and newly licensed to drive. Yet the results they achieved in getting exceptionalgas mileage would do credit to experienced drivers. Objectives 'of the rally' Agere .simple. Each par, containing a driver, stu- dent navigator -and teach- er observer, covered a course of 60 miles. The • course included city street, expressway and rural roads. The driver was to complete the course in 90 minutes. • - Contestantswere briefed •on economical driving Page 5 techniques and require- merits before ' they de- parted. They were -advised to make sure their cars were in top condition• with a tuned engine, proper tire pressure and correct wheel alignment.' Average rriileage per car was 19.220, m.p.g, Winning car was a '73' import with average mileage of 27.836 tn.p.g. Cars ranged in size from sinail imports to full- size American models.
