Themeter_ on the gasoline pump crept slowly toward
the four -gallon mark.,As it stopped at 3.8 gallons and
filled the gasoline tank of the car, part of the assembled
crowd cheered while another group groaned.
This unusual setting for a high school competitive
event was, a gasoline station in San Diego, California
anti the event itself was
the first Champion Spark

The assembled students
and teachers were con-
cerned with every drop of
gas used.
The Rally, inaugurated
by Champion, Sought to.
show that gas economy,
safe driving and good fun
can be achieved 'by evert
the most inexperienced
drivers.
All competitors from 10
high schools in San Diego
were recent driver -train-
ing graduates and newly
licensed to drive. Yet the
results they achieved in
getting exceptionalgas
mileage would do credit to
experienced drivers.
Objectives 'of the rally'
Agere .simple. Each par,
containing a driver, stu-
dent navigator -and teach-
er observer, covered a
course of 60 miles. The
• course included city street,
expressway and rural
roads. The driver was to
complete the course in 90
