Rec board delays decision. on
Hockey grant until newyer
The Goderich Recreation
Board re-examined a grant ap-
plication from the '.Goderich
Minor Hockey Association at
their regular meeting last
Thursday night and tabled .
their decision until after budget
time in the new year.
The hoard discussed the ap-
plication after hearing a letter
from the president of tile
association,' 'Bill Reid. Mr. Reid
said 'that the association would
still be deeply involved with
fund raising but would like
very much to be working
toward this year's, expenses
rather than be concerned with
last year's. -
Minor hockey owes ap-
proximately $2.,000 to the rec
board for 1.97.3-74's ice rental
bill. They have $1,000 'which '
they would give the rec board
and -wish to use a $400 grant
they received for a coach's
clinic as a payment on the ice'
bill. The remaining $700 would
be paid as a result of the
:igrxnt.• from rec board.
The failure to hold a coach's
clinic as a result of the transfer
of that • $400 grant sparred
some discussion from.the board
members. Bruno Lapaine
questioned minor hockey's',use
of the clinic grant. He felt that
the money was slated for 'a
clinic and if . no clinic' is to be
held then thefunds should not
be spent. He added that a clinic
is "badly, badly needed."
Emily Crew felt that the ice
bill ,minor hockey' had ac-
cumQlated should" 'have been
brought to the board's atten-
tion at the end of last year's
season. -'She said she had been
unaware of thei3• financial,
stress and was "shocked'.' when':
she learned they owed . the:
money.
, The rec'board decided to give
the association the $400 to use

in any way they wish but that
they would stipulate the
necessity of using it for a clinic
alone in the future. They did
not decide on the $700 grant
but will ask the minor hockey
association for a financial
statement in January when the
board's budget is drawn up.
The other grant that the rec•
board' was approached •wiilO
Came up in the discussion. The
Goderich Art Club had asked
the board for money to stay
their studio rental costs for the
future. The club felt that thu
needed assurance that they had
financial backing before they
rented, a studio,. but were
assured that if they found a
place and after all their efforts
could not pay for it, then they
should apply for a grant. The'
board felt that some risk had to
be taken by the Art Club before
they could give them a grant.
The Art Club, have ' not yet
found a- suitable studio and
thus have not applied for any
„specific sum. It was their inten-
tion to ask for the rent costs in
the form of a grant. A fear that
the club could not operate' un-
der the financial burden moved
them to make the application
for a grant. A decision on the
grant has been tabled until the
'new year should the' club .en-
• counter difficulty.
The recreation director
reported to the board on •the
winter classes offered by the
town. Mr. Dymond indicated
that the majority 'of classes
have been very successful.
New courses have been well
attended. ". Ballet has an
enrollment of 23 people, yoga
40,ball room dancing has' at-
tracted 22 dancers and six or
eight more have indicated they,
are going to come- out. • Judo
and karate have classes twice a
week and are crowded. The
karate school is considering of-
fering Saturday morning

The Saturday Morning Club
had only fiveipeople out and if
the attendance does not im-
prove the class will be .can-
celled. Men's' fitness classes
were cancelled but ~there is, a
•possibility,.that a-xen's basiyet-
' ball league wiIr be 'stfrted;
the new year. The Camera Club
has 15 students and will begin
very . soon. •

-the season. He said that the
arena is being used from -122-
124 hours a week. Public
skating will begin this Sunday
from 1:30 to 3•:30 and the cost
will remain at 50 cents. The rec
board is reviewing the -charge
for public skating to see if the
cost should be increased to
match other arenas.
,The rec board decided that a
tender system will be used on
capital expenses over $500. The
decision came after a
discussion sparked by the bill
for the painting of the arena.
Bruno Lapaine suggested that
large expenses by the rec board
should be tendered and the
lowest bid accepted. Some of
the members felt that all ex-
penses should be tendered but
it was felt that too much time
would be spentin'reviewing the
tenders and a $500 limit was
set.
