Hell and Goodbye, United People! I was hoping like toad
that, we'd win our last game•and finish the soccer seesorin a
blaze of glory! (Big Mama loves to boast about her boys!!)
, , In actual fact, our "get-up and go" just plain."got-upa•d
went" We lost -miserably to the Yugoslav -Canadians, 4-0. A
shut -out!! Ain't that a "bummer"? If sure wasn't the best of
days, in more ways than one. The weather was terribly cold,
a couple of fellas were missing from the regular line-up and
we didn't begin the "match on time, which all. added ,Alp to
disaster!
In the first half, the opposition racked up three goals and
that is a very' depressing arnount'to try, to catch up to and tie
in a remaining 45 minute period. United• ju5b-wasn't with it
and that's the ,straight goods, pure and sitnple!
For such a proficient team as ours,' we sure looked like
rookies! (no offense, Iain!!) The defense was unsure and un-
stable and the forwards w.ere all over a0d then again,
nowhere; which resulted in sloppiness, That's not to say
United didn't try .'they did; but not as a unit. So, we left the
first half with, a 3-Q score hanging over us. During the last
45 minutes, Howie Gottschalk was switched to 'the forward
line from his heavy position on defense, in' a vain and
valiant attempt to retrieve some lost ground .from the
Yoguslays. But try = as he might, Howie cbuldn't get the
needed break away to take a shot on goal. The opposition
took, an opportunity during the remaining minutes of the
game, to whip a final goal on us and the score was a fatal 4-
0. Ugh!).!
I hated seeing this game lost, but was too darned frozen to
complain!! (which was a godsend, no, doubt!!) You really
gotta love a team to follow. them faithfully through thick and
thin. and in rain, sleet and,, snow! Fans are crazy!!
Clare Sager rates the "Player -of -the -day" award for his
steadiness and firm determination. Way to play, Clare!
"Sportsman -of -the -game" is once again (and forever!) Rolf•
Gottschalk. You better know ole "Mighty Mouth" charmed
the referee's cold heart with his witty repartee and his usual
cool suave!! ,
"The Showmanship" award is reserved for Iain Lambert,'
the one and only. "Rookie." We took a lot of hassle and still
managed to perform skillfully. (He also gave as good as he
got!!) "Big Mama's_ Special" , for Rick Fisher for a game
well -played (as only "the Toe" can!) and Bill "the Whipper"
Wedlock for a fine showing and some great passing. (That
boy doesn't know his Own strength though. Some of those
kicks were fantastic!)
"The General" rates a special mention for his services in
the line of duty. Playing two positions in one game is ?hard
enough;' playing them wellis something else, again. Although
he wasn't up to par, Howie's innate training won't let him
do anything but the best•he can at that given moment; so he
carried off his game° with persistance and perseverance.
. I'daike to wish everydne'a'fond farewell until nextseason.
