RAI -PH KING, North Street United -Church r, A PRINCELY INHERITANCE the Lord was .with Joseph." Gedesis '39:2 , A. boy cannot outlive his early environment. The biblical historian records that in the severe 'trials which came to Joseph in he land of Egypt the Lord was with him. And the Lord was with htm ,in Egypt because Joseph carried the knnwledge of God in his heart when he went out of Canaan into that strange ,land. All this was the result of home training. His father, Jacob, had bequeathed to him the faith that had illumined his own life since he dreamed his dream at Betbel. Once more we' see an example of hoica parent may be,justly proud of a noble child, for he has had a Marge,. slittire in making him what he Jacob was a rich man. From the' first, he had an eye for a good bargain, but he came dangerously near making a wreck of his own soul through his- inordinate love of riches.. .The Lord led him through many trials in order topurge him of this sin of avarice. In his defense, let it • be 'said •of' Jacob' that ,he was: no doubt moved by the desire to leave a good inheritance 'feirr his sons after he. was ,g -one; 'but material goods do not constitute our richest inheritance. Jacob prospered, but Joseph never, had need of his father's flocks and tents and . camels and.,S•e•r*Virtils. There was something he would need even more: character. When he was a mere lad, he was separated from the •dear and ennobling ties of home bythe treachery of his brothers, ' and sold into slavery: Untried in the ways, of the world, a youth of tender years, he found, himself even- tually in the midst of the godless and lustful society of Egypt. Such conditions would try anSione's soul. But : Joseph had already received something from his, "father which was to prove far more valuable to him than any material could' have been in. •his new situation had learned froin , hi fathei" how, through , all his checke'red, career, an Unfailing providence had guided him. The example of such afather was a. princely inheritance. Guided by it, Joseph weathered. the storm; and, rising'above the injustices done to him and the evil that threatened to 'engulf him, he emerged one of God's noblemen. "A vase son maketh -a glad father," the bible tells. us. Jnseph's, godly • character, and untarnished name, were the Most comfortable -laurels that.
