Ptited Soccer 'News -
Hello, United Fans! Be prepared, folks, because today's
col'um,n°is not a happy one ora particularly',objective one.
If that sounds as though I'm angry, it's only because I am!
When you're as involved with a team as I and an emotional
42 female as well, it doesn't,Make for objectivity!
We lost Saturday's game in St. Mary's to a score of 2-1.
It's not this fact that I'm bemoaning; but the way in which
this team (42?) won.
From the starting whistle to the final toot, this bunch of
"Demolition Derangos" were out for blood, pure and simple.
And they got it, too!!
. In the first half they showed their claws and never let up
on Our United men for a second. The referee's warnings
(when he decided to give them) didn't phase them or sway
them from their purpose; winning this game at any cost,
which. eventually they did.
They decked our ,goalie during the early minutes of this
half, but he recuperated enough to continue. But not for
._ long, because .midway . through" this period. of play:,. Goalje
Alex was severely kicked in the face and hid to be taken to
the hospital for stitches.'
This was a completely senseless and unnecessary act on
Si. Mary's part and brought. the fans' wrath upon them.
Late in this half, St. Mary's scored their first goal from a
penalty shot.. The second half was every bit as hairy as •the
first and our United, guys were hard put to keep their heads
together (literally) and pull off any kind of a play, because
this team was bulldozing at every turn!
.Goderich tried their utmost to -move about and get that
ball into the St. Mary's zone and finally with beautiful
precision the fellas executed a. lovely maneuver which
enabled our own Brian Allen to score our first and only goal.
• Minutes later, the opposition scored a fluke goal and we
knew we'd had it.
I can't begin 'to tell you' howbeautiful your team was,
Goderich., United is a group of fellas who were unjustifiably
pushed beyond human control, butgthey hung in and really
worked to save thin game. They played hard, fair (most
times!) and with class and I mean class in the' -truest sense.
When. you have no skill like Si. Mary's you resort to cute
little capers to pull off a game; but United know -their. stuff
and they use their brains, not muscle. (which seems to me
the. proper way to.performin soccer or any sport) I'm not
really knowledgeable about sports and I .. don't claim
anything but interest and love for Goderich United, but to
me any sport -Would be shown to its best advantage by proper
usage of plays and rules.,
When all caution is thrown.to• the winds and the game
becomes "Murder Ball", something is seriously wrong. As
I've -already mentioned, I'm not being terrifically objective,
but I've got "Right" on my side and I don't think you can
cite me for that.,
Grafi ted, 'United didn't play up`"to par' aid after the
goalie's accident (??) a.couple of players were visibly shaken
and upset, but how can you compete against such tactics? Do
you resort to brute force also because you know brain power
isn't going to pay off?
United withstood all the flak and in my very humble
opinion they came out.on top. The entire team rates a "Big
Mama's Special Super Dooper" and a few deserve extra
special attention.
First comes Rolf Gottschalk, who was definitely "Player -
of -the -day". He was nothing less than fantastic and his style
of defense was strong., and decisive. Great work, "Mighty
Mouth"!!
Next is Dave Graf who is always a, positive force to be
reckoned with. He played magnificent (and the adjective is
not overdone!), soccer and his movements were quick and
sure.
.Our loyal 'General', Howie Gottschalk has always perfor-
med with, distinctive style and super:skill, but forthis game
he was "par excellence" and he is a perfect'example of what
team spirit can accomplish. He protects the goal in defensive
tactics that border on hair-raising at times and at others, are
a pure joy to behold they're so cunning! You've earned your
5 stars, 'Holly!
Q Our blc»ide and brawny 'rookie', Iain Lambert played a
terrific gameand was just generally skillful in technique and
performance. Way to. be, guy!
Tony'Van D ongen made a valiant effort as reserve goalie
and deserves the "Sportsman -of -the -game" award.. Tony's
earnest dedication and desire to win are always a mainstay
to the team. We wouldn't be without you, .fella!
So, that's it for this week, people! Be proud of your team,
Goderich," because they're a special bleed!
Next week's game is in London against the German -
Canadians at 3 p.m. on, Sunday, See you there?
Tune in United and turn on to soccer. 'Til next time, God
bless, keep, fit and stay happy.
United' we stand - Forever!
Love ya much,
'Foxy
