around with buying a used
house?"
Councillor Haydon told him
it • had been estimated that a
new facility` would cost ap-
proximately $200,000. ,(A • day
care centre constructed a *year
ago in Wingham cost $150,000
and allowing for increased q
costs, Mrs. Haydon estimated
the expenditure in 1974-75•
would be $2,00,000.)
She went on to say 'that in
her opinion 4 such ark expen-
diture, even if it was provincial
funding, was, prohibitive. She
said a big housewith a kitchen
and a large yard, centrally
located, would be ideal and
would cost considerably less.
Coancillor Eileen Palmer
reminded council that govern-
. money "in the final
analysis comes out of our
pockets •
The Goderich nursery school
now has• an enrolment -of about
50 children who attend on a
half-day basis five days a week.
Mrs. Haydon talked briefly
about the possibility of offering
day care services in a new
location equipped with a kit-
chen This way, meals -at the
noon hour, could be prepared.
A survey a. year ago of the
need for day care services in
Goderich revealed only
minimal interest. Only ten
families expressed a willingness
to, utilize a day care centre's
services if one was established
locally.
.In an interview with Mrs.
Haydon .Friday morning,
however,' she indicated that
more interest may be shown if a
day ; care centre in
operation locally • — or if the
project was better Understood..

had not come • to town for the
meeting last week.
-Council was also advised
that it was "a point of law"
that it is the Town which must
make the agreement with Mr.
Cassina:
Councillor Dave ,. Gower ob-
served the' Town should have
"somecommitment ave
"
sor"'(Mr. Cassina) some 'way or
• another."
Bill Schaefer of the Parking
Authority appeared before
town council to recommend the
provision of "more property for
long term parking thus
providing more short term
parking spaces."
Mr. Schaefer said that if ad-
ditional off-street " parking
could be provided for persons
working in the downtown core
area or intending to spend
:several hours shopping in the
stores, more on -The -Square

An article in last wrek's
Exeter Times -Advocate reports
that town council there is con-
sidering a day care centre for
that municipality. One member
of council, Reeve Derry .B9yle.-
whn •in the past has been op
posed to such facilities, has
cianged his mind 'after visiting,
day care centres in Wingham
and Listowel.
The T -A story noted that the
Wingham centre, hag 2,7 •
children; there are 35 in the
Listowel school. Casts to
parents range from $3.25 ,to
$3.50 per day per child.
The centres are open from
6:30 a.m. to 5:3p, p.m. Meals
are provide0 for children who
are at the centres fc r the, full
day.
•Communit`' colleges are
presently turning out graduates
in pre-school education and
staffing of such day care centres
is not. too difficult:
A. committee in each com-
munity set up rules on what
basis children -will be accepted.
It was shown, however, that in
Wingham and Listowel, the.
largest percentage of children
come- from outside the towns
and ,both municipalities are
having- difficulty getting the
neighboring townships to share
in the municipality's share of
the operating costs.
One of the most important
aspects of the day care centres
from the point of view of Reeve
Boyle is that female employees
are .now encouraged to go to
work.
.He noted that business and
industry eeds women in the
work force) and often have dif-
ficulty hiring them because
they are needed at home to care
for their "children.
short-term parking •spaces
'would be freed.
He said that using Bylaw 29
of; 1972 a •the guide, one-
. parking space for every 200
square feet offloor area in the
business district should be
provided.
He said that by;that formula,
5124arking spaces are„•required
and only 313 counting the
Knox Churg ` eking lot) - or
about 011'percent b.f the •
require number'-, are actually,
available.
' Council went into committee -
of -the whole .later that evening
to discuss some particular
properties which the committee
had considered fpr . off-street
",....'parking areas. The matter was'
later.. referred to the . Ad-
ministrative Committee
chaired by Councillor Gower. _

for the employees but he was
'Confident in their ability. He
once sold General Motors
85,000 pipes to be delivered in
'five weeks just . on the con-
fidence of his' fellow . workers.
• The staff worked round the,
clock to meet the order
deadline and not one pipe was
' returned for faulty Workman-
ship. -
"We leave no stone untur-
ned,” said Mr. Chisholm. "Our
product is manufactured with'
quaiiy and workmanship and
we stand behind it with very
thorough service."
In other, business, . council
agreed to file the matter of. •
uniform business hours in the
.province' of Ontario; approved
the expenditure of $1,500 for
Christmas lighting; and was
reminded of the public meeting
October 16 in the assessment
office at 7 p.m. re zoning.
