basements hold' dangers
Traditionally," basements
are gathering places for a
family's _junk—old• clothes, •
- ,papers, half -empty paint
cans along with oily rags.
Traditionally, ' killer -fires
start in basements where
they can grow unnoticed.
Firefighters rescued three
screaming .• children from
the second floor of a down
town row -house this spring.
The children,.wwere trapped
there as the house filled
with flames and smoke. 4
neighbour described them
as being "really . freaked
out" by . the terrifying ex-
perience.
The blaze started in the
basement. -it was virtually
out of control before it was
noticed.
The fire occurred at
night, and investigators
wanted to know if 'the chil-'
dren — the youngest of
whom was 2 years old—
had been left , unattended.
The answer was ° "yes
and no." The sitter had
just stepped out for a
minute." This- led the in-
vestigators to comment:
"This just goes• to show
how important it is .for,
adults in charge of small
children to be on: guard
ALL THE TIME;' nog just'
some of the time."
