Sunday's game against Ingersoll resulted in a 3-1 score and it was our game from beginning to end. It was -an extermely windy day and I was positive ,that rain wouldn't hold off; but I must've said the appropriate incan- tations because the weather held and so did our luck!! We began the first half with a whimper but managed to finish it with at definite bang!„ - "The General'''. couldn't seeto get "his troops” to remain in their proper formation for awhile, but eventually they all tuned in to each other and it was smooth sailing! The entire forward line had been switched around (tactics, you `'know!) and the fellas played a bit raggedly until they became„ accustomed to their new positions. Ingersoll iS a fairly rough and tumble team and they were determined to keep°gGoderch challenged throughout the game: 'They kept the ball in our zone for a'good- length of time and gave the United goalie a busy time until United_ ' decided that they'd had enough of that jazz and starting off • the scoring sweepstakes was "the Shadow" himself, Pete, • Teichert. Helobbed in a nice, sure shot with an assist from • Brian Allen, and gave us the. incentive we needed to take full control of the play. Further scoring did not continue until the whistle called the last half into action. •United .had numerous oppor= •tunities for scoring but they misjudged a few and the Inger- soll goalie didn't hesitate to come out and stop their shots. Eventually, Rick .Fisher received a lovely passt-^fpm Harold Refflinghaus and Chalked up a second secured goal for Goderich. "The Toe" can go, don't you know"?? Continuing their aggressive assaults, United- made many valiant attempts to add another mark on our scoreboard, but our efforts weren't rewarded until the dying minutes of the game, when Brian "the Brake" Allen carne across with a whoppe'r'of a.sho.t and scored our third and final goal of the 'day. Fantastic, Brian!! During this 45 minutes, Ingersoll •had squeezed in a : goal which Goalie. Alex tried vainly. to save. It gave him the "dickens" of a time and between this battle of. man an :••inanimate object, pie latter won! (unfortunately!) When the referee blew the final, whistle the, fans acknowledged • United"s tenacity with some happy ravin`!! I- salute .our goalie Alex Varga and 'bestow upon him the singular honour of receiving the --.very •first "Gosh, I -played - good" Award!! Ccingrats, B.B.!! _The, Piayer,of-the-nay.. is awarded, to Clare Sager, who . played expert and efficient soccer. My"Big Mama's Special" is sent out to Harold "Big H'' Refflinghaus for a spectacular and, suspenseful "almost -goal"! Also, to Iain Lambert who gave, a good account of himself (not bad, "Rookie"!) and' • Pete Herlufson' receives a "special" -for his steady playing and quick -reflex action. Way to 'go, "Huff" (,yes, that s you, • Pete!) Sportsman of -the -game" is. strictly reserved for Rolf ;`Mighty Mouth" Gottschalk! We charmed the ref and literally "tumbled" his way into our hearts!! Special thanks to the turnout of fans. Thank you for your • support both vocal and newspaper - wise. The team couldn't do without your .encouragement and- interest. Next week's match is again on .home" turf. We, play .St. Columban at 5:00- p.m. Try to catch us? Tune in United and turn qn the soccer! Till next: time, God' bless, •keep fit and stay happy. United we stand (or sit) - Forever! ° Dr. Tom Jasper, it Goderich dentist, gave the first of a series of three talks to the Goderich Rotary Club last Tuesday about his -trip to the Republic of South Africa. •% Sppnsore'd by the group study ' exchange program of ' 'the Rotarians, Or.
