Winston Churchill said during World

today as .a record ; number of strikes in
'Canada are shaking the economy of, the
whole nation.
Canadians owe lost pay; cheques .and
some of their economic woes to strikers as
they ask, "Isn't there a better way of seta
tling • labor disputes?"
The men on strike feel they need higher
wages to keep up with inflation. And they
do. But ,their failure and management's
failure to settle quickly is like a pebble•
dropped in a pond. As the ripples from the
immediate' splash move toward the edge,
more people are affected and upset. .
A prime example. is here in Goderich.
Alout 100 workers at the Domatar Sifto
%ft Mine were laid off'recently as a direct
result of strike by 475 deck officers and 400
ship .engineers against the Canadian Lake
Carriers Association which began August 8,
It °'has paralyzed shipping-irr' the• Great
Lakes and coupled with the grain handlers
By Jack Riddell,
strike on they west coast prevents Canada'
from meeting its grain• shipments abroad.
The federal .government has refused to.
directly end the strike although' Labor
Minister Sohn Munroe has put his ear to -
the door where the talks between labor and
'management are being, held and• has told
Canada on nightly news casts that progress
towards a settlement is being made.
When the strike first, rnade a splash in
the Great Lakes„.management of the two,
Goderich industries most affected by it,
Goderich Elevator and Transit Co. and
Sifto optimistically -told the. local press that
it ,would be business asusual.
A spokesman, for Sifto, Karl Butler, said
in the middle of August that his company
would stockpile salt underground until the
--strike ended. The stockpiles would be
needed to fill' orders when the lake
freighters sailed again.
He candidly admitted that lay: offs might
be necessary if the stake was prolonged but
felt at the time, Sifto and the press should
wait and see what happened.

Truck and rail' have been the answer to
the problem of getting grain to the
Goderich Elevator company. George Par-
sons, president of the company, said in
August that Ontario grain would keep 'his
workers busy- although no western grain
was 'arriving by lake freighter. •
By the end of August, Mr. Parsons
showed that he was becoming more concer-
ned about the strike. _
"We are,not suffering now and won't be
unless the strike goes beyond the end of
September", he said.
The end of, September is 11 days away.

Free drug plan has its problem
• The new Drug Benefit
Program which provides drugs
free of charge to more than
548,000 Ontario : residents 'has
been in effect for only two

program..
The original intention of the
program was to alleviate the
burden of the high cost of
health care to those who could
least afford; it. However, in
some cases the program is'of no
value since the drugs needed by
