(staff photo) • Goderich nran finds Iceland "parddise" BY MARTHA RATHBURN Iceland is celebrating a cen- tennial year- 874 - 1974 the eleven hundredth year! When a group of 70 people left 'New York City on Icelandic Airways for Keflavik, Iceland and 'Goderich's Bill Wisser (wiser) „,was °with them. I•n Iceland• (Island in their, language) the group .boarded two 'buses for 13 days of touring that will be .long remembered. A land of great contrasts, it not only has the largest glacier in Europe but many hod springs, - geysers and volcanoes. A land of ice and fire. As recently as 1970 volcano HEKLA .erupted and in 1961 • volcano ASICJA was active. •'' Just over a year ago, January 1973 on- the tiny Island of H ix miles off the aimaey, .s southern°' coast. of Iceland, a fishing village and an„ impor- tant .ha.rboiar were threatened with'extinction. Five thousand - people were evacuated as their homes were,burned or buried in ash, lava • and cinders. • The icy waters slowed down 'the lava flow which filled jn a great deal of this important harbour. The little island's eastern shore 'is now widely ex- tended and in the future will be inhabited. • The surface area of Iceland is, approximately 40,000 square miles 'with. ,about 80 percent 'uninhabited. Total population around . 200,000. in 1944 . prgclaimed a Republic headed by a President. Today it is an active merYiber of 'United Nations and several other in- ternational . There are no trees .or grass but mass; lichens, flowers and Shrubs are brilliant in the crystal-clear air -and water there. , The Mountains, waterfalls, National' parks with crystal clear lakes, cities and villages with their national sites, geysers and chasms make ,_touring the country quite. an °' adventure. Educational standards have always been high 'in Iceland. 'Farming, especially sheep raising, is a main occupation. A great deal of their sweaters, blankets and other stems are made of•the undyed wool which has many shades , and tones from quite light `d- a good• black. s Fishing is an ,important. in- dustry with cod, herring, ocean perch, haddock and others in large quantities. Fish and fish products make up. more than 90 percent of value of their exports. Hydro electric power supplies cheap electricity• and the natural heat from the earth is ' used for heating the homes,. sic,00ls, swimming pools and green h9us,es. • For those interested in Nature tours and Conservation. Iceland is the westernmost out- post of a numberof Old World species and the'easternmost of some of the New World ones. The Greylag Goose, the Whooper ,Swan, Loons, Grebes, some species of the Auk Family and many many" land and -sea birds are' found here. ' Por some one like Bill Wisser this was a •paradise•and he has' brought back much information and many„ samples of life ,in Iceland - photos, hits of lava, fossils etc. " Bill has arranged Bluebird Tour's in this area and presen- tly .works with the Bruce Trails, helping develop 'a section ' of Blue Mountain trails. Also in Devil's. Glen he makes. the trails safe,'and interesting. Dr. Allan V. Morgan, prof. of geology and marine life at.
