Goderich nran finds Iceland "parddise"
BY MARTHA RATHBURN
Iceland is celebrating a cen-
tennial year- 874 - 1974 the
eleven hundredth year! When a
group of 70 people left 'New
York City on Icelandic Airways
for Keflavik, Iceland and
'Goderich's Bill Wisser (wiser)
„,was °with them.
I•n Iceland• (Island in their,
language) the group .boarded
two 'buses for 13 days of touring
that will be .long remembered.
A land of great contrasts, it not
only has the largest glacier in
Europe but many hod springs,
- geysers and volcanoes. A land
of ice and fire.
As recently as 1970 volcano
HEKLA .erupted and in 1961 •
volcano ASICJA was active.
•'' Just over a year ago, January
1973 on- the tiny Island of
H ix miles off the
aimaey, .s
southern°' coast. of Iceland, a
fishing village and an„ impor-
tant .ha.rboiar were threatened
with'extinction. Five thousand -
people were evacuated as their
homes were,burned or buried in
ash, lava • and cinders. •
The icy waters slowed down
'the lava flow which filled jn a
great deal of this important
harbour. The little island's
eastern shore 'is now widely ex-
tended and in the future will be
inhabited. •
The surface area of Iceland is,
approximately 40,000 square
miles 'with. ,about 80 percent
'uninhabited. Total population
around . 200,000. in 1944 .

ternational .
There are no trees .or grass
but mass; lichens, flowers and
Shrubs are brilliant in the
crystal-clear air -and water
there. ,
The Mountains, waterfalls,
National' parks with crystal
clear lakes, cities and villages
with their national sites,
geysers and chasms make
,_touring the country quite. an
°' adventure.

raising, is a main occupation. A

Iceland is the westernmost out-
post of a numberof Old World
species and the'easternmost of
some of the New World ones.
The Greylag Goose, the
Whooper ,Swan, Loons, Grebes,
some species of the Auk Family
and many many" land and -sea
birds are' found here. '
Por some one like Bill Wisser

brought back much information
and many„ samples of life ,in
Iceland - photos, hits of lava,
fossils etc. "
Bill has arranged Bluebird
Tour's in this area and presen-

helping develop 'a section ' of
Blue Mountain trails. Also in
