The Canada Company Char-
ter was drawn up on the 19th
day of August, 1826, embodying
the previous arrangements and
items- in the ACT and as
secretary, was signed as wit-
nessed by John -Galt. for the
Canada Company. '
Frederick J. Robinson (rater
Lord Goderich.) Under
Secretary of the Colonies and
War, suggested that John Galt
be sent to Canada and accor-
dingly. Galt was appointed °by
the Court of Directors of the
Canada Company to proceed
•on a special mission of inquiry,
for the Company, to Upper
Canada. "
He left England on' Oct. 26;
1826 and after a stormy voyage
reached New York -on Nov. 23.
Qn leaving New York he •
toured the Genesee district, in
the State of New' Yock, bor-
° dering -'pan part of the south
shore of Lake Ontario, the
Niagara River, and .part of the
south shore of Lake Erie. He
visited the two .large land
holding, companies , there: The •
Pulteney Estate. at Geneva and
the Holland Company at
Batavia.
• Galt was shown their method
of operating, their bookkeeping,.
and the terms for sales of land.
He saw the settlements these
_big companies had founded
first, by building a store, an ac-
commodation. for travellers,. a
grist mill, lumber mill,'
•.blacksmith and in time a school
and church. They had good
- 'routes by land and by water,
and -available- markets, and
they took produce in payment
for land.
After leaving the Genesee
country, John Galt arrived . at„
York, Upper Canada' Otf Dec. 12
and promptly delivered the let-
ter, of introduction. from the
• Court . of Directors of :the
• ,Canada" Company, signed by
John Hullett, to His §xcellency
.Sir Peregrine Maitland, K.C.B.,
Lieutenant Governor of Upper
Canada.
John Galt was surprised to'
find Maitland coolly polite and
acted. almost chagrined that
Galt had been sent to represent.
-the `Canada Company., After
considerable ' correspondence'
and visits, Galt -at last found"
out that. the "thank you" inote
he had sent to Wm. Lyon
Mackenzie for copies of the Ad-
vocate. (which was referred to
by the legislative :council of Up-
per 'Canada, .as. a `scurrilous
