your eyes on this news, fans! United won out against
St. Columbort on Sunday and the taste of victory is sweet!!
Although a stiff breeie played havoc with the ball, the team
managed to overcome this extra handicap and give the game
some added zest!
The starting whistle was just minutes gone, when John
_Gottschalk shot in a lightning -quick goal and that's :all both
teams needed to get the action underway! Within a very few
minutes of further play; St. Columban retaliated with their
Cirst goal and this spurred the players to wa$e the battle in
earnest!
Checking and covering were ale order of the day. (And!
mean "order"!). Man for man, efforts were made to keep the
:-+/ball in the "enemy's" territory, with goals the ultimate aim. .
And 'Brian Allen needed no encouragement to take a shot
on goal, with success. Brian's goa! for Unitefi, brought the
score up 2-1 and excitement was running high with both fans
and players'?
St. Columbary is not a team to dismiss lightly. They're like
"terriers," °f -Hey never let down for a moment! The ballbeing
the "bone of contention," of course! Play was really fantastic
from all members. They gave out every ounce of strength for,
each play being sqt' up.
D.
t!
During one of these "`skirmishes," Rick Fisher headed a
beautiful shot towards the goal and Brian `Allen reacted in-
stinctively and kicked the ball into the net, resulting in
United's third hard-earned goal! Beautiful work, boys!!
With not much time remaining in the first half, the "heavy
artillery" was laid qn by St._.Columban and United reacted
accordingly. There wai an abundance of' warnings and
reprimands by the referee. (This deterred the teams from
their objective tot one whit!!) °
During the final minutes a .shot was made on the Goderich
net and in an effort to deflect the ball' with his fist, goalie
Carl gave aid to the shot as the ball glanced off his knuckles
and fell into the goal. (If he'd been handed a rope, he would
have been swinging from the goalpost!!• Poor Carl felt
terrible, but what can you do? It's one of the many hazards
with which a goalie contends!)
When the whistle blew half time, esAryone needed a.
breather! With the last 45 minutes looming ahead, the
players were nervous and anxious, but oddly enough, no,
goals were scored at all. A penalty kick was awarded to St.
Columban, but they blew it. and 9oderich fans were greatly
relieved! Lots' of action ensued but no results from all this
dedicated effort!
Finally the whistle officially closed the match with a score
of 3-2. (Another notch on the -gun, for United!)
I'm going to acknowledge a few players who were injured
earning this ."glory" for United! They "hung in" and gave
help and encouragement to the 'last second.. Dave Graf and
Rolf Goltschalk with leg injuries and Toby Van Dongen and
Dan McCallum. with minor 'fluke' injuries and Harold Ref-
flinghaus with a previous leg injury, played his game to the
hilt and came out smiling!.
I'm not giving any. "locker room speeches" this week; suf-
fice it to say that we're proud of our team. They're all "big
guns" on the soccer field and a fine example for our minor
teams.
Speaking of minors; I hear the competition may be stiff for
you boys 'soon!! The girls' soccer teams are up and- coming
these days! Move over 'male chauvinists' and make room
for some female talent!! Good luck to the "Rookies" and
"Cuties" and one word of advice; always , give your best.
„Our next match is being played in LondonLon Saturday,
June 29 at 5- p.m. Catchus at the turf? If not, wish'us luck
and think of `us;! "
