go into an. ad and pastes these
up in the same position the r
salesman had them, .in hie-'
rough copy. The result is a-coni-
plete newspaper page as the
readers see it.
The final touch is ''done by
the editorial department staff.
The headlines for each story
are written in, rough and taken
to the headliner. The headliner
is a machine similar to the
computer in operation except
that it. sets larger type and is
manual.
The operator sets the type in
the required size `which may be
anything from 112 inch to 1112
inches in height: The headline
is typed out "and again tran-
sferred to light. sensitive paper
through a series of lenses. The
larger- type' found in ads in the
'paper is also 'set on this
machine.
The printed headline is taken
to paste-up and placed over the
corresponding story. Thus the
finished page which is taken to
,the press room 'to be printed on
newsprint` and turned into the
weekly edition of the Goderich
-Signal-Star, Clinton News -
Record, and Kincardine News.

Mrs, Phyllis Steep, a longtime employee of The Goderich Signal -Star is circulation manger
for that publication: She keeps careful records of subscribers and their addresses, news stand
"sales, over-the-counter sales and all complimentary copies. She knows fusty how well the
Signal' -Star is being received from month to month and she reports "a definite increase". Total
paid subscribers in March 1970 were 3,343. In April 1974, total paidsubscribers numbered
3,644. Circulation figures now are better than they have ever been, according to Mrs. Steep.
