time as a researcher. , •
Since, its purchase ' by the
Signal in 1967, the News -
Record has gone through some
tumultuous times, including
the closing in 1971 of the
Canadian Armed Forces Base
three °miles south of town,
which had employed over 3,000
persons. Despite the loss of the
CFB Clinton, which,. now has,
been turned into the growing
community of Vanastrii, the
News -Record managed to hold
its own" during the "mini"
depression following the base
closing, and now boasts or a
press run of 2,700, nearly 20
per cent more than in 1967.
The. average size of the paper
has climbed from 10 pages to
16 'pikes in those eight years.
Besides the Clinton staff,
there are nearly 25 persons in
the Goderich plant who have
some part in the News -Record's
production Most notable are
Shirley Straughan, who is the,
hidden talent behind the News -
Record in the paste-up depart-
ment; Ila Pollock, Millie John-
ston, Lloyd Lounsbury, Brian
Rurriig and many others who
are mentioned elsewhere in this

issue. After it is printed, the
News -Record- is .brought back to
Clinton where it is mailed by
the Hartman family, who
smetimes work late into the
night.
In thelast two years, the
News -Record has been rewar-
ded for its efforts, and las.t,
summer, they were named third
best paper in Canada in the
Canadian Community
Newspaper Association's 2,000
.to 3,000 circulation class and
took home two plaques, one for.
second best front page, and the.
other for third best editorial
page. Last February in the
provincial competitionsof the
Ontario Weekly Newspapers
AssOCiation, the News -Record ,—
received two trophies for the
best sports page and the best'
women'.s page in their class,
and the paper was named the
third best all around paper in
the same class. • '
Most of the credit for the
awards goes to the co-operation
and pride that both the Clinton
and Goderich staff take in put-
ting out a good newspaper
every week, as the papers for
the competitions are picked at
random .from the year's
publications.
