Computer codes only sound strange
,e. . Supershift M, Shift B, Super -
shift L 6, Lower Mag, Lower
Rail, Supershift - 9, Quad Lek,
Return. ,
Although this sentence
means nothing to the reader it
means everything tothe com-
puter that is printing it. It is.
the code the tape perforator
types so that the computer will'
print the story in the right type
size and space and will print it
in the', proper column width
with the proper space in bet-
ween the lines.
After a story is written or an
advertisement made up,. it is
taken to the composing room to
be set. The first step in the
composing room is a tape per-
forator. The operator of this
.,
machine retypes the story onto
a tape substituting holes for let-
ters. -Eich hole in the inch wide
,,,,,,tape has a comparable letter,
number or. punctuation mark
The tape is coded by the
operator so that when it is run
through the computer the;
finished product is exactly what
the editor or ad salesman
wants. The example shown
above is the code that would be
.used for this story. '
Supershift Ivf is the code to
..‘\.
start the computer working on
newscopy. Shift B tells the com-
puter how wide thecolumn is
to he. L 6 is the space between
each line of print. Lower Mag,
Lower Rail is the code for light
face print that is found in news
copy or black'face that is found.
in the sub -headings in a story.
Supershift 9 means the size of
the:. print. The computer can
print letters from 'five point'
which is about 1/32 of an inch
to 18 point which is 'about 1/4
inch., Quad Left Return is
similar to a typewriter, carriage
in that it returns at the end of a
paragraph or line to start a new
one.
• The computer, that the
newspaper depends on so
heavily is a Photo -Mix 8000
produced by the Singer
Business Machine Company. It
" has a -memory bank that can
store 1,000 characters and
--receives instruction from the,
paper tape as to what character
or series of characters to use.
The machine is capable of prin-
ting 150 words or 30 lines per
minute. It can change from four
'different type faces, each with
eight different size, on the
move with no loss of speed.
The computer. transfers let-
ters from a perforated tape to
light sensitive paper by sending
light through a series of lenses,
The machipe justifies the letter
transfer on the left and, right to
allow for paragraphing and
column widths. . -
Advertising copy is also
producedthrough the Acom-
puter. The ad salesman gathers
the information from the
customer and consults with
hitn on the layout of the infor-
mation. He discusses print size
and type that is going to be
used. All this is put in a,rough-
copV.of the ad and is sent to the
.composing room. '
The copy in the ad is then
typed out on the [Yerforated
tape and run through the com-
puter. From here it goes to the
paste-up girl who is in charge of
assembling all the news and
advertising copi, into separate
pages.
The paste-up operation tran-
sforms .the printed material
from the computer into a
newspaper page. The paste-up:
girl begins with a broadfold
sheet that is the same size as a
page of the paper and has lines

and, line spaces. Th
