Advertising manager
Ed Byrski
Service is his motto
An ad man's job is never
easy but Ed Byrski, the friendly
advertising manager from the
Signal -Star makes it look like a
piece of cake.
Ed's been selling space for
SignallStar Publishing Com
pany since 1968. He, came to
town from Strathroy where he
worked with the Age Dispatch
first -as, a prih-ter's assistant and
later as an ad salesman. He's
also had plenty of experience in
the makeup department and
the darkroctirn at both Strathroy
and Goderich.
When he first arrived in
Goderich, he worked with
Signal -Star owner and
publisher R. G.'`Shrier before
„being promoted to advertising
manager. Since that time, Ed's
natural ability and congeniality
have helped him Ito oversee the
ad department with such suc-
,cess that the Signal -Star has
made its mark as ,a reputable
selling aid for merchants in
and around Goderich and a
trusted shopping guide for the
readers in that area.
With his regular full-time
assistant. Dave Williams, Ed
Byrski not only sells ads for the
Signal -Star and all its special
efforts such as the recent
bride's edition, he also services
customers who use the Huron
Shopping News' as an adveri
tiling tool.
Just -recently
Shopping News
the Huron
-has moved
+ from its once -monthly format
to a twice -monthly schedule.
That means Byrski and
Williams have nitre area' to
cover more calls to make.
It is another reason,too, for
the addition of summer staff
this year in the _advertising
department. Hes Kim. Ainslie,
a Goderich son, whois con-
tinuing in the tradition of 'of-
fering imaginative advertising
campaigns for the local mer-
chant who wants to build a bet-
ter business.
"Local businessmen are good
clients," says Ed Byrski.
"About90 to 95 percent of a l l
our advertising clients are local
businessmen. A high percentage
of them use the Signal -Star ex-
clusively and all use it as a
major portionAt' their adver-.
tising efforts:"
Ed estimates that in a
regular work week, his depart-
ment makes between 30 and 40
calls :on customers for the
Signal -Star alone. And that
doesn't include the countless
telephone calls which come into
the office from persons who
have something to sell or the
dozens of people each week who
arrive in person at the Signal -
Star front desk to seek adver-
tising advice.
One of the biggest jobs of the
advertising department, accor-
ding to Ed, is to ensure a fresh,
