If the high quality of work
the editorial and advertising
departments ;strive for is to be
maintained for the readers'
benefit then the press crew
must take tremendous pride in
their work. After the paper
leaves past, -up it is taken to
the processing room - to be
prepared for printing. It is here
that the efforts of the ad man
and the ° photographers- are
carried to the subscribers.
The first step in processing is
in the dark room. Each. page is
laid out individually and shot
on a Kenro 24'1 Vertical

Camera. The film used in this
camera is 18 inches by 23 in-
ches by 1/5000 of an inch thick.
The negative is developed until
the desired quality is reached
and then placed in a'stop bath
and fixed at that point.
All the pictures that go in
each issue have to be shot
separate from the pages. This is
because the camera°is sensitive
to black .and white alone. If a.
picture was shot with the page
it would only be silhouetted. To
allow for a variety of shades in
the picture, it is half -toned.
This process screens dots of dif-
ferent colors into a condensed
area identical to the original.
Each square inch of paper -con-
tains 100 dots that could be all
one color or three, different
colors.
After all the half -tones are
put into place in.the negative of
the page itis opaqued. This is a
•
simple ' painting type , of
procedure that eliminates all
the unwanted blemishes on the
negative; The opaque is applied
with a thin brush to all the
specks of white that may not
have been developed properly.
This eliminates black ink spots
in the paper.
The negatives once com-
plot 1 are burned onto a light
sensitive aluminum plate. Each
plate is :36 inches by 24 inches
by 1/9000 of- an inch thick.
'Prior to thin each plate is run
through -a plate coater which
resemblesthe wringers of a
washing machine. This coating
is light sensitive and after, each
plate is done it has to be stored
in • a safe -light room. This
prevetits the glare, of a light
bulb from exposing. thew
chemical ;much like the film of
a camera:
The coated plates are placed
in a carbon -arc plate burner
with the negative of the page on ,
top of it. The ultra -violet rays
of the carbon expose all the
white areas of the negative -and
