As a lifelong resident of
Goderich, Howard Aitken
remembers the Signal -Star as
something that was always
there. Little did-Jhe realize that
one day he 'would be vice-
president of Signal -Star
Publi.shing Limited and
publisher and general manager
of one of the firm's
publications, The Clinton
News- Record.
Howard" Aitken has always
been a businessman. Im-
mediately upon leaving high,
school, he took over the former
Sparr's 'Grocery Store on,
Hamilton Street. He was there
for 15 years until 1965 when he
joined Commonwealth Inter-
national as a sales represen-
tative.
In 1966 he became a part-
' time employee of the Signal
Star, selling ads for the newest
publication, The Huron Shop-
ping News. By July of 1967 he
was convinced 6f the imminent
• success of Signal -Star
Publishing Limited and joined
the firm as a full-fledged em-
ployee.
The Huron Shopping News is
now one of Signal -Star
Publishing's most successful
operations. Just • recently the
publication went from its once -
monthly format• to' a twice-
monthly schedule. Advertisers
all over° the county are happy
about the response they get.
through the Huron Shopping
News and at the present time,
Kim Ainslie, a summer em-
ployee with Signal -Star
Publishing Limited, is testing
"the market for both the Huron'
;.. Shopping News and The Clin-
tonNews-Record.
The Clinton News -Record,
this year an award winner at
the Ontario Weekly Newspaper
Convention in Toronto, .is
flourishing under Mr. Aitken's
management.
"Circulation has increased
modestly but well within
relation to commerce in the
surrounding area", Mr. Aitken
"says. Circulation is up about 30
percent since 1967 and the
average 'number of pages each
week, has gone 'up by 50 percent.
"People are certainly respon-
ding to our efforts in Clinton",
Mr. Aitken states.
The present editor at Clinton
is James Fitzgerald, at, jour-
nalism graduate from the
University of Western Ontario
Vice-president J. H. Aitken

who came to this area in June
of 1972. . •
"Of the series of editors that
.we've had'at the News -Record
since 1967, Jim Fitzgerald who
is married and has his own
home in Clinton, seems to have
found the best rapport with the
people of Clinton since .A.L.
Colquhoun was the editor and
publisher", Mr. Aitken says.
Mr. Aitken's duties, however,
do not end with The Huron
Shopping News and The --Clin-
ton News -Record. As vice -
style.
president of Signal -Star
Publishing Limited and a direc-
tor of the firm, he has'respon-
sibility in management
decisions. For the past three'
years, he has conducted wage
negotiations with the staff and
has • been closely involved in
budget matters.
Mr. Aitken is married and
lives with his wife Margaret
'and daughters Debbie and
Susan at 37 Market Street in
Goderich. ^
