The Clinton Centre of Conestoga College held . its first
graduation ceremony recently . honoring th.e
students who enrolled at the school two years ago when it,
opened, up. Among the 100 graduating students were these
three area girls who reseed special recognition for their
academic achievement.Nancy Robinson, left, of Goderich,
received the Dashwood Industries Award for being the most
proficient stenographic commercial retraining student;
Elaine Townsend, centre, of Bayfield, received the—Signal- • '
Star Publishing Award for the most promise in the1ield of
writi g, and Betty Low, formerly of Goderich, now London,
rec Ived Faculty `Association Awards .for being the most

season with confidence and his
usual vigor, remarked this week
that this season still is a crucial
one -for the continuing survival
of the Pl-ayhouse as costs, soar
and personnel needs increase.
"The 'Playhouse is- indeed.
growing as a major entertain-
ment spot for -residents as well
as,tourists," he Said. "Bringing
in professional performers and
technicians from across Canada
and developing area talent are
major undertakings, but it
'meets the 'community's desire
for its own professional sum-
mer theatre. Thus, season
ticket sales are vital! We have

paign by efficient community
leaders. We have strong foun-
dation and Ontario Arts Coun-

television -June 1 was termed a
"tremendous s-uccess by
organizers as about $8,00() was'
pledged by viewers when the
show 'went off the air at 11:20
p.m.
Organizers, have publicly
thanked . persons contributing
to the CARS.
Some contributors' names
could not be mentioned on the
air however, as time elapsed.
These local people include -Joe
and Marjorie Maclntvre, Harry
Adams Crane Service, Mary

Feed Jewell named Sheriff

tings in •€aunty Courthouse,
Goderich, recently, Fred'
William -Jewell was sworn in as
sheriff for the County of Huron
An Order -in -Council ap-
proved by Her Honour, the
Lieutenant Governor of
Canada is believed to be a
'first' for this area.
• His Honour•Judge F G. Car-
ter in conducting the ceremony
said,• "Sheriff Sturdy who had
served for 15 years sustained a
stroke last year and retired
early this year. Mr..Jewell with
his advantages of youth and
good locks has been named as'
sheriff of this County of
Huron." -
He then told a story of 'how
the name SHERIFF came
about, • - - . •
The office of sheriff goes back
to Anglo-Saxon days when
England -was divided. into
,"shires", "Hundreds" and
Townships -' or Vils - Anglo
Saxon French for settlements
such as small villages.
In England the word shire is
attatched to a great many
names - Gloucestershire for
example, • and sounding like
'Glostershirr'.
The officers of the shire were

when the system of travelling
judges was established by'coun-
oil of Claredon in year 1166
the 'sheriff' lost the power,
to hold court, when the Nor-
mans introduced the King'

Justices.
The sheriff was later charged
with the :supervision of the
court 'arid the comfort and
safety of the judges.
One might he jailed for
killing a judge hut hanged for
harming a'sheriff.
Even today we find in Court
procedure a continuation of the
"Kings Justices!"
The sheriff, sets the dignity
and `decorum of the court and
-Judge .Carter feels .sure -the in-
tegrity and decorum •to - be
found in Canadian Courts i5
safe in the hands of the new
sheriff.
The dress of the sheriff was
found , to be interesting,
'Properly robed he would be
-' wearing a long tailed - or 'mor
ning' coat with—stand collar,
black shoes and dark grey
striped-' trousers, and a six but-
ton waistcoat.
. On the morning coat six rows
of barred braid were' stitched
,,, across both sides of the front,

braid and buttons and pocket
