PAGE 6-00DpRICH SIGNAL,STAI, THURSDAY, JUNE 6. 197
Another ,nice weekend. You
forget about the miserable
weather during the week, when
the weekend,is nice. Here it is a
week into June .but it still looks
like early spring. The lilacs are
out in all their_ glory - and
fragrance - the tulips are still
beautiful. The apple trees are
pink and white - and the cherry
trees managed to bloom
without getting frosted, At least
in our area they seem to have
su,rvived.
This weekend the Sorority
Ball.
The weather and growth is
about the same as in other
years for,the Bali - but it is a
week or two later than in other
_years*. This . was always a
"Spring Ball" and we tried to
have it in time for the lilacs.
I wonder how the group, who
usuatly have their "Lilac Tea"
in May, managed this year?
An interesting meeting last,
_Saturday gathered about thirty,
concerned citizens together to
discuss the proposed
Recreation .Complex. Hundreds
of letters were sent out and ad-
vertising advised he reason,
place and time Thirty
erianizations receix special
,
letters.
There were thirt\( some
people present some,
organizations not repre ented.
Many people ,jus could 't at-
tend and others for . T is is
alw"ays the way. But "a few,
people thoroughly discussed •ke..
many. questions, ideas a d
recommendations.
I just hope those who didn'
make the meeting don't se
themselves up as critics of what
'is being done. So often they are
quick to criticize or they
disregard the issue completely. -
This recreation complex is
not just a SVORT complex -
there are a great many interests
besides -active sports. Think
about it.
In November a goodly num-
ber attended the meeting and
members of the Lions Club, for
one, were very enthusiastic -
about the issue and ready t
help 'the fund raising which will
be necessary. Other clubs
agreed that for a fast growing
community the complex should
be started as. Soon as possible.
All agreed that a pool and
another sheet of artificial^ ice
was badly needed all year
round. MacKay Hall is
crowded .day and night with ac-
tivity - and as a community
centre it leaves - much to. be
desired. Therefore a building
with sufficient , space for
meeting rooms, workshops,
facilities for art and crafts, a
place where young and old
alike could congregate, do
things and •enjoy themselyes
° should not be a dream any C
longer but a- reality. •
A concert hall for music and
the performing arts is sadly ,
needed here. And so is banquet
hall and dance space needed -
and, this floor might also make
for roller skating the year
round.
There are so any wonderful
ideas that can be crowded into
this one complex if we can' just
get it going.
Discussion of building sites
brought out the fad that there
is a great deal of space - right•
in the middle of the town, being
wasted.
Agriculture Park is within
the !each of everyone, yet it is
being used a few times a month
by race fans who are mostly
from out of town. Because we
have no parking facilities for
these people, attendance is
dropping off, , and the town-
speople certainly couldn't sup-
port this 'Sport of kings!
*If this sport could be located
in the wide open spaces where
there could be proper parking
areas, better seating and better
arrangements the race fans
would flock in to Goderich
again.
At the Park the 'centre sport
area used for'ball games soccer
etc.,- byboys of all ages would
be available all week and more
people could be encouraged to
watch these games if there is
'off the streets' parking.
The Rec:, building itself could
become a reality. ,
As. for the raising of funds -
look at what Kincardine has
raised recently for a new arena
and,sports and community cen-
tre. Are we going to Jet Kincar-
dine show us how? With ice the
year round we cars have hockey
schools, or figure skating
classes - AND public skating all
year.
The young people need roller
skating all year instead of a lit-
tle ice skating and a little roller
skating during the year, both
these' sports keep the kids ac-
tive and out of the pool room -
at least, off the streets. They
don't get into too much
ischief with skates on.
Our senior citizens could use
ork areas as well as play
a eas. Perhaps they are not
quite as active as a few years
ags , but let's not bog them
do n with inactiyity.

Altho' we should be,bowling
for the fun of it, someone seems
to always come up with some
little prize for the top three
winners.
Monday, Thursday and
Saturday nights and •any or all
afternoons for all who wish to
enjoy lawn- bowling. There are
bowls at the greens so you will
,need to worry about them.
Some of our , senior citizens
have been out and agree i, is a
wonderful game.
The young marrieds would
also enjoy this game since it is
enough of a challenge to make
you forget, all your woirries or
frustration's -of the day.
-June 8, Saturday, have a
good time at Sorority Ball;
June 12: Holmesville United',
Church ham and turkey supper.
