Contractors meet to discuss new septic tank regulatioi
The Ontario government's
movement into 'septic tanks
Aptlil 16 prompted a public
meeting at the regional
assessment office May 23.
Organized b the Ontario
Ministry of the Environment
and the Huron County Health
Unit, the meeting focused on
explaining to area contractors
new provincial regulations
governing septic tank in-
stallations.
Regulations and permit ap-
provals were the domain of
county health units until the
ministry gained jurisdiction un-
der an amendment to the En-
ironmental Protection Act of
1971. -
Jim ,Janse, the ministry's
district officer in London, ex-
plained to the 32 contractors
attending the meeting„,t the
amendment would make
regulations uniform across the
province.
Licensing of contractors
would eliminate "fly-by-night
operators" who do shoddy
work. Old county regulations
did not require contractors to
be "licensed.
