United soccer dub
wins second time,
14
J3Y RONNIE VARGA -
Hi, people! Believe it or not, Goderich United has secured
b another win! This was their second official league game and
it was not "run-of-the-mill"!
The team has seen better days and better Slays! The rain
stopped long enough for the game (big deal!) but it was cold
and very, very muddy and slippery. The field was not ideal;
it was covered .with little slopes r the shorter players almost
disappeared from view a few times!
This combined with the fact that the boys didn't play their
usual flashy and skilful style, made fora poorer grade of soc-
cer. They just couldn't seem to get their 'motors' going in the
first half, although we were granted a free kick (no, you
don't get to kick a member of the opposition!) which Howie
Gottschalk employed to good use, He marked up one goal for
United and things started to look up. But poorsportsman-
ship on :the part of a few of the Yugoslav team, hampered a
lot of the plays and a few tempers were itching to de -fuse!
Toward the finish of the first half the Yugoslav Canadians
scored,a goaland thus it remained until the whistle blew for
the beginning of the second 45 Minutes, of the game. Now
Goderich United decided to put on some steam and very
shortly Harold Refflinghaus whamnred in a goal and we
were, looking good!
•A lot of effort was put into chalking up another mark on
the score sheet and minutes later Harold again sent the ball
into the net with resounding force!
With ,the score 3-1 we were encouraged greatly and
everyone put extra "oomph" into their plays and that
elusive ,ball looked close to being .in for Brian Allen and
Dave Graf assisting, but to no avail. The Yugoslays scored
again, and the game was ended minutes later. `
We ('the fans) were jubilant naturally, but the boys were
displeased with their' performance. (Pei fectionists all). To
quote one team member as he° came off the field, ' "We
stink"!End of quote!!
Nevertheless we won and with -gentlemanly conduct to
boot!. With a few of the -opposition bent on frying tempers
and hampering plays with illegal moves it can be pretty hair-
raising. United fans showed their displeasure with vigorous
protests and witty repartee! (We're loyal but mouthy! We're
also brave with all those big, Strong United men to defendmus
from ;.physical retaliation!) Wanda and I got terrific wind-
burns and looked like a couple of blushing brides! (.which we
definitely are not!.)
Someone who deserves,, extra -special credit for a game
well -played is Clare Sager.' He is fast becoming a very skilful
'soccer player. He made some exciting plays and was in-
valuable to the teat3h.
Dave Graf again,''is a team member who is always in there
pitching and his timing is great. If='you strung Daveup by the
heels''to •the goalpost, he'd still find a way to contiibute to
the, game!
Howie and .J,ohn Gottschalk did a gr^at job (as usual)
although Howie was a little "shhwv"-. (all,,that sliding and
tumbling in the mud was obviously playing to the fans!!)
These two brothers along with Clare held the game together.
Fantastic work, guys!
Brian Allen performed tremendously and gave his best,
"Lost his boot at one point and in the best tradition of "Cin-
' derfella", we girls were dying to put that boot on his foot for
hini! (It's not every day you have a chance to attend the Ball
with the. Prince!) 'And 'Whipper', we •missed you, man!
People don't.realize how trying it is to perform, well in soc-
cer. Two important requisites areessential: lungs and legs.
The greater percentage of the team plays on the field for 90
minutes.' On top of the running and maintaining proper
breathing, there's also skill "and lightening reflex -action.
Training, training and mpre training keeps the team in top
form, (Boy, I'm glad I'm a girl!) The coaches
keep ham-
mering home this credo crnstantly,
Speaking of coaches, you couldn't mistake them for a
minute! Coach Profit is the fellow with the 'jaunty' red cap
••perched upon his head ,at a 'jaunty' angle and two cigars in
his r outh.(also at a 'jaunty' angle!) Combined with his
'Jaunty' walk, there's no mistaking this, Scotsman! (Hoot
mon, he's frae Edinburgh!)
On the ' other hand there's Coach Varga, easily
recognizable by the smoke coming out his ears! The 'Wild
Hungarian' paces constantly during a match and needs a
new pair of shoes for every game! They certainly are a color-
' .pair, (not maroon,, and white!).
The. next game is in two weeks time at home. The date is
_"the 26th of May (Sunday) at 6:00 p.m. against Clinton.
Catch us at4he turf! I promise yilu it'll be worth it! `Til
next time, God bless, keep fit and stay, happy. 'United we
stand divided we fall'! Foxy.
