The Goderich Signal-Star, 1974-05-02, Page 14sI 0 , PAPE 14—GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, THURSDAY, MAY 2, 1974 fly/Vitt"° rewoman chairs By WiLMA OKE About 250 delegates attended the annual ,Spri, tafg Conference of District No.'2 oT Hospital Auxiliaries Association of On- tario held in Ingersoll Monday. Members of Ale rtAdra Hospital Auxiliary -4:Q Ingersoll` were , hostesses for the ,..con- ference held in Trinity United Church with Mrs. F. MacDougall congener of the conference committee. Mrs. Peggy Menzies of Clin- ton presided over tire -day -long conference, -She gave a detailed report of the district, stating there are 5,§71 members in the 20* auxiliaries in the district which stretches from. Guelph on tl a east to Goderich on C,the• est, Mount Forest to the north and Tillsoryburg to the south. She said these members had raised $166•,77.0, of which $x45,000 was spent or},ho.atal equipment and $5,000 on burg caries and education. "Auxiliaries in Action" was the teme.,- of the morning session, when five workshops were held, The 'first workshop Fund Spefiding, was conducted by OS ita duxiliar Mrs. J:M. McGrigor of Cam- bridge, who told the auxiliary merhbers they should be well informed about 'the hospital board. She urged that every auxiliary should plan the whole year ahead by having an organized plan'" on how to raise - money and how it is °to be spent. Mrs. McGrigor emphasized the importance of spending money from fees or if needed, • by money from special projects, to educate auxilahry members, by. `sending thea. to conferences and workshops. She said as r many as possible should l?e sent to conferences, but expenses for` two' delegates `only should be paid to voting members to.at- tend `the annual convention in Toronto each October. Mrs. C.J. Worsell of Goderich spoke at the workshop on Gift Carts and Shops in Hospitals 'under 100 beds, and advised that'every article should be marked with the price and the tax so that any volunteer working in the shop would be able to readily see this when making a sale. With the warm weather providing', for. excellent cycling conditions. the Goderich Police urge all parents to remind their children that• cycling can be dangerous, and that the youngster 'should be alert at all. times and obey all traffic signs and lights. The cyclist MUST ride with the traffic and NOT in the op- ' posite direction. it is only when waking ori, streets where nod'' sidewalks exist that the WALKERS have'to. walk FACING the oncoming traffic. Parents are urged to ensure that the cycles, are in good running condition and that their child knows hdw.---to stop properly and quickly. Ohildren should also be tested on the correct hand signals and, when to use 'them. REMEMBER YOU MUST AI'WAYS CHECK BEHIND1 YOU ,BEFORE MAKING ANY TURNS, ESPECIALLY A LEFT TURN. YOU MUST ALWAYS LET THE DRIVER FOLLOWING OR AP- •• PROACHING YOU, KNOW THAT YOU INTEND TO TURN. One very common offence in Goderich rsFailingto Stop at a designated intersection. Far too, many persons believe that they must STQP.at a STOP' SIGN. This is NOT correct. You MUST stop FOR a STOP SIGN but NOT AT the SIGN. The Highway Traffic Act states •that a driver of a vehicle (and this includes a bicycle) MUST. come to a FULL STOP when approaching a Stop Signat an intersection. The vehicle can be stopped at 'any of ,the following places.* at a clearly marked Stop Line;' or, if there is no Stop Line, then IMMEDIATELY before entering the nearest Crosswalk, ' or, if there is no Stop Line or Crosswalk, IMMEDIATELY before entering rhe intersection. , , . Ln other words, the Stop 'Sign position is NOT necessarily the place where you must come to 'a halt. The sign may be set far back froth the intersection or fairly close, to it, you have to look for those other three locations.- Generally speaking; stopping immediately before enteringthe intersec- tion is the best possible place to stop as.otiou can usually be. seen more easily by oncoming' drivers. As for Stgp Lines and Crosswalks, not all intersections in Goderich have them. Watch those Stop Signs .•. but stop -for them and not AT them. C`4?5The Square is a very bad place where motorists will stop either at the'sign or the cresswal.li. and then charge out onto 'the Square with complete disregard for oncoming. vehicles. Another section of the Highway Traffic Act states that when entering an intersection, even AFTER you have stopped .correctly for the, top''Sign, you MUST not pull out .unless you proceed with caution and that you MUST yield the right of way ,to an approaching vehicle which is so close that it constitutes an immediate 'ha'tard. Finally, Crosswalks themselves. The 'Pedestrian has the right M way under normal conditions. The motorist ,must .yield to :the pedestrian who is ,crossing the street. The' p--ea-estrian ,Kiust also. NOT --just jump out in front .of a Qrrbbtorist. There are obligations for both driver and pedestrian and drivers leaving the Square must be careful to give way for anyone already crossing the intersecting street. • Too often some motorists` charge 'off the Square narrowly missing those walkingacross the street. In Goderich, as in' all places, safety is EVERYBODY . BEING CAREFUL AND CONSIDERING OTHERS.. ,... s, decorations which took great acclaim Friday evening. Busis•n,essmen, organizations, and townspeople are thanked for their generousity and "co operation in tending the school various items which are needed to help put every last detail in the dance. A very special thank -you is in order for the principal, Mr. J. H. Stringer, student council ad- visor, Mr. Wm.,Wark, and the heads of' the decorating com- mittees who have been workin. with the organizational part o the dance probably longer than they care to remember. ,Once again, I would like to thank everyone who helped make the formal ,a success,' and -for many I am sure in future ° `times, it will be a Pleasure t look back on the days of "when we were young". Sincerely, Jane Smith. • Caps;', 'bands., pigs, bars Sunday was a special day for Candystripers 'at Alexandra Marine and 'General" Hospital whey they received a'ova is for voluntary services They provided.'One girl, Emily Crew, gave 1,005 hours of her time over the past year.
