Welcome back to my little corner of the world! By now, you've,,either decided to stick with me for "better or worse" or taken off for "greener soccer fields"! Oh• well., what's -a few male chauvinists?? • happy -to report another victory for Goderich United, For a while during the early afternoon, it looked as if thun- derstorms would postpone thefun, but luckily for' all concer- ned the weather turned out right. (Boy, was it right •forour team!) • . o Thought the first half was going to slip by without scoring, although it wasn't, fell' flack' df trying. Talk' about tenacious teams!. The guys on both sides were terrific, never letting down for a 'second. • St. Columban 'is a team to keep you on your, toes. (In soc- cer cleats that's a difficult feat!!) (no pun intended!) They're strong, fast and good at checking. But United has that extra "Something" and approaching . the end of first 45 minutes,' "' 'Harold .efflinthaus came through x • a tricky goal (it even bowled th 'goalie ,aver!) Hooray for our Cap- .tain! The wind was up a bit for the second half, so the boys really hustled and as usual, came through with flying colors (Maroon, and white of course!) John Gottschalk scored another goal', from a penalty kick (these , re• John's specialty!) and we were away with two points and still -no score for St. Columban. , • - Now the heat'was on. And who should come across with,a spectaculargo 1i it_goo old Brian Al-1•en2.NowRrian's one fella I love to watch. For pure -unadulterated enthusiasm and flying feats, he's something else! He played an ex,cep- tionally fine and knowledgeable game. Great work, Brian! Minutes later , St, . Columban's Brian Murray followed throw with a goal (thanks Howie!) and the -game remained 3-1 'for G,pderich United. Exciting play and just plain hard work earned us another win! d I have a special- mention for Willie Wedlock,; who is always a force to be reckoned with. He played well and w•as a sfepdy aggressor throughout the game. Also, got the mud- diest didn't you "King"? Goalie, Carl Moller made some difficult saves and Dave Graf kept busy as per usual. Clare Sager came on strong -and 'Wag really in_stride in the'second half. Rolf Gottschalk is always quietly on the job, steady and competent on defense. It was a pleasure to see Ev,,Middel out there again, Ev's a.n "old standby" of many years' experience 'and an easy Player. Moonlighting from -his job'as co -coach was Alex Varga. He refereed a good game and managed to keep breathing! It was nice to see more of our regular fans back at the turf. It's en- couraging for the fellas to know we care! Since last year Gwen, Wanda and ' I' have been kicking around the idea (when you run with a soccer team everything.gets "kicked" around!,.) of forming a cheerleading squad or.becoming pom-pom ''girls or generally "messing around" on the sidelines! We could call ourselves "The Tacky Trio" or "The Bomb Squad" (f, myself am par- ticularly good at bombing out!) Fran has volunteered to be half-time entertainment. Od- dly enough, oureager suggestions have met with little response,' from the, tea'm!•(Oh well, there's always oranges to be cut for half-time!!) • , Beginning next issue, I'm going to introduce one member of the team each week with a brief biogrtaphy and accom- panying photo, so' be on the lookout for Goderich United. Home game next Sunday against Exeter Centennials at 6 p.m., so in my sultry Mae West voice I urge you to "come on and see us sometime"! For yiu "hip folk" I say "Truck on down and dig us"! However it's said, please come out and cheer for your team. We'd love to see you! 1'i1 next time, .God bless, keep fit and stay happy. Ronnie KINTALI e: Mr. and Mrs. Stan.
